After a long look at hints for SMW hackers, I realise that I rushed my hacks out before going through them throughly, checking for bugs and gliches before I send them out. Well, I went over this game 6 times, and it's just the way I want it. It's a revise of my first hack with new enemies, a better storyline, and Luigi's SSB fireballs.














I did the best I can with what I had and what I know, so its up to you guys to criticize my game's backgrounds, rain, and overworld without even playing the hack. I worked real hard to make this game enjoyabe, so I hope everyone have fun playing this hack.

2. This doesn't look like the same hack. The status bar has changed, mario has chaned to pink, and the blocks mario is standing on dont really look that great. The BG however is VERY cool!

3. Blocks dont look good and luigi looks dark with no shading

4. Why have those transparent blocks? get rid of them. everything else is good as long as yoshis tounge doesn't mess up because of the castle sprites.

5. Tthis is only the 4th hack I have seen with changed OW boarder graphics (including mine) good job. However, the START square needs some palette help. Make it use the same palette as the mushroom that you have behind the cloud. The overworld is a bit square aswell. But other than that it looks good!

6. Oh god, please change charging chucks head. It doesn't look that great.

Fix this stuff and it will be MUCH better.

First off, not many people know you can do this. You could simply change one level and people will be amazed. They don't know you can do this, but all of us here know about all this stuff. Don't think that because your friends and stuff like it doesn't mean us (who most of us have been hacking longer than you) will like it.

Second, this is not you first hack. I believe you have released another hack before (correct me if I am wrong).

Judging by the screenshots, some to me seem fake. I am mainly pointing at the second and last screenshots. It is not possible to change layer 3 graphics for every level.

Although I have yet to play this, I will play it. In fact, I will download this now and tell you what I think of it.

@luigi: No-one here posts comments to bash or offend you, it is just to help you improve your skills. You should have the enough maturity to accept what's being said and requested that you fix in your instead of feeling offended by our criticism.
I wouldn't feel secure on releasing my hacks before hearing enough criticism pointing what i did wrong and what i should improve.

People have to have enough humbleness to accept criticism on what they did wrong and try to fix their mistakes.

Chests: Good. Only problem, it looks odd floating. But if mushrooms double your height and Yoshi can eat endlessly, ANYTHING goes.

I know exactly what you mean. My hack was just like yours but worse because I just wanted to release it. Nobody even remembers my hack. I took it hard, and then I joined another board. This is a great board that cares about the individual and tries to help and work with them as opposed to criticism and put-downs. What I suggest for this is make an animated .GIF for each frame of the animation to show the skeptics exactly what you wanted to show them in that screenshot, because unfortunately, they judge by what they see, not how the hack plays.

Also, here is what I suggest with the treasure blocks:
Keep the original question blocks, but also keep the treasure boxes. Put them on the floor or underneath something so that they cannot be hit from underneath, and also because it looks better when sitting on something. That way they can be hit from the side from Luigi's cape or by an enemy.

I've played this hack up to Desert Island 3, and I've liked it so far. I have some comments to make though.

On the overworld. The top right and top left edges of Desert Island look weird, also on that island, the whole thing looks awkward with all the blank spaces filled up with hills. On the islands that hold Seaside Path 2 and 3, the edges of the island that connect to the bridge look odd. You could take the right facing arrow path and move it over to the left one space, but unless you moved the right island over a bit more, nothing can really be done with it.

The portion of the brown hill connecting Mysterious Woods' island to Desert Island looks out of place. It would look less awkward to replace that bit with a bridge as well. Other than that, the overworld looks fine. I have one question though: what's the bit of bridge in the upper-right of the overworld for?

Comments on the screenshots:

1) The palette of those 4 blocks looks weird. The moving platform looks alright in this level, since it's against a dark background, but when it appears on other levels, it looks pink and ugly

2) Two things here: with the chests. I like the idea, but they just look funny floating in the air In the status bar, there's an 'L' instead of 'Luigi'. Something from an earlier version?

3) Even if you make the background only slightly tinted, it'll look better. The white color takes up too much of the screen.

4) I've played levels already with rain in them, and they look alright. I don't think I've played this level yet, but the screenshot makes it look bad. I agree with KP9000's advice. Make an animated .gif to show what the level looks like while active. I like the idea here of having 'windows' in the castle.

5) What does the 'T' stand for? I could see it having an 'S' for 'Start', but 'T' makes no sense

6) The 'T' has returned in the Yoshi Coins. Is there some hidden thing in the credits that tells you what it means?

Other than that, things look good One last question. There's a few levels with those bird enemies you can jump and get a ride on. What sprite do they replace, or is it custom made?

Meh, I don't see what you people are whining about. The people judge based on screenshots, yes. If the screenshots are good enough they play the hack. This is why you present what looks best that still looks good as a still image. Since a new hack comes out every week or so, we don't have time to play every one and will go by screenshots, which makes making good screenshots important. I look at your screenshots and I see things that look poor, so I don't play your hack. You criticize me for judging things I haven't played, but I don't have the time to play everything and only want to play the really good things.

It was supposed to be the 2nd player,But I turned my game into a 1 player with that patch.

There Monty moles i changed to those birds on SMB 2

If you think about it, really hard, its a Mario game, in a mario game, blocks float in the air, wierd things happen in a mario game. so i still don't see anything wrong with the chests.

I'm not trying to take this stuff personal, or create drama. This is the only site I can share my fun with SMW. but I'm done for a while, I'm tired and I'm going to bed.

Wow! 9/10! I know you didn't get a ten, but I'm a bit hard to please.
1: The outline around the item box is orange, but it doesn't pose as a problem in my eyes, because it seems to... blend in! This may not need to be fixed.
2: The treasure chests that replace the brown used blocks are a bit strange since they float.... hmmm.... maybe you could use animations and put a little hand-drawn propeller tile underneath each chest!
3: AWESOME background.
4: I seem to notice the flower a bit more here, so I'll say this here. The others say the flower looks wierd, but they have problems. It looks fine. I see nothing wrong with it.



Pretty average. 8/10.
1: Lacks sprites. That is, unless you already killed off a few enemies.
2: Put one more berry or two on the bush.
3: Same floating problem with chests, I still suggest little propellers.
4: The white background color suggests an overcast day. Since you already have clouds, it looks like a strange fog or mist feeling. Make it a lighter blue.



Very involved, I give 10/10.
1: The idea of using clear translucent blocks for widows is very neat, and it even looks realistic!
2: The rain does make it a bit unclear. Remove a drop or two from the animation.
I have something to say to cpubasic13. These pictures are not and do not look stolen. He did not edit the graphics or much less use layer 3 in any of the photos, exept for the overworld photo. The graphics were changed, and that is all, and that is very possible, you know. Why am I saying this here? I just got the feeling that in this particular photo, you thought the rain was on layer 3. If that is the case, no, he put it on layer 2 and enabled the priority for the rain tiles.



Hmm, this needs some work... 6/10.
Mostly a decoration problem, I'll list the decoorations I think you might want to add.
1: Clouds. If you put a few layer 1 clouds in this overworld island, it'll look a bit more realistic. I am sure that at least one of these levels in this area has a cloud background.
2: Palette. Like everyone else said, the palette for the starting pad is messed up. Easily fixed, you know.
3: Graphics. Maybe a little sparkle or two in the level tile would look nice. And I am assuming the "T" stands for your name, right?
4: Graphics (again). The island does, come to think of it, look a bit square. Maybe put a few jagged edges on it. Oh, and put a little island or two in the water.
5: Layer 3 looks good here, although I suggest something else to replace the fireball graphics.



Looks great, but 2-point deduction from charging chuck. 7/10.
1: Why 2 entire points? The head for the charging chuck is seriously weird (halloween was 2 days ago, dangit) I mean, videogamerpat did a great job with the koopa head for the chuck, and I think you could do a much better job too if you put a little more effort into it.
2: Luigi's fireball looks cool, now I suggest that, if possible, you use more than one color for the fireball, 2, maybe three, but only if possible without messing up any other palettes. It already looks fine, but that was only a little tip.
3: The coin looks fine, but there's a little thing you must remember. This is not the first version of this hack you released, so make it say V.2. I assume (again) that the "T" is for your name.

Great going with everything else in these shots, Link2004!

Well, a few other people are being a little agressive, and I assure you, their explanations were a bit short. I like a good hack, so I separately reviewed each screenshot with tips on improving it, so your hack could be better. I never critisized, or a least tried not to, and I hope my info will help enrich your hack. It is true I haven't played this hack, and I don't plan to because I can just watch my little brother play it, because he liked your first version of this hack, but these were all judged from the screenshots.

It seems very enjoyable to me, and I bet those that have played it have had a good time.


And I know this was a lengthy review, but I wanted the hack to be improved. I personaly dont mind the worlds being square like that, after all it looks like the world is modeled after SMB3 (Start and level panels) That was exactly how they did it in SMB3.

The question blocks and coins are looking good. The mushroom looks nice too, but I recommend placing a black outline around the mushroom so it looks more "full".



Nice fire flower, but the block on the right has a weird color. A good idea for that would be to go into the 16x16 editor and tinker with the palettes the block uses until you find a nicer one.

This is MUCH better!

Your mushroom is very cool, I haven't seen the NES SMB1 mushroom used before, good job. The blocks are 100% better. I have never been a fan of them but you can't please everyone (they still look very good). Flower looks better, chuck looks better, goomba looks quite cool, even the item box looks better (its not missing a line of pixels at the bottom any more).

However, the only things I can see not so good with these new shots is the pirana plant mouth and the block in the second shot. The pirana plants look really cool, but the mouth has to much black outline.

Tthis is really alot better. See everyone needs some criticts to make their stuff look better.
