We thought about implementing some kind of convert-to-RSS process/script for The W a while back but never got around to it. I'm still interested enough in the idea to ask if the feed links are getting a lot of use here, or if it's just turned out to be an interesting challenge that got done, and is extremely clever, but no one actually uses - which is usually the case with a lot of the things I seem to end up doing. I'm not really sure what RSS is yet... A bookmark that notifies you when the site has been updated?

actually I think several people are using them.... they are going to be revamped into more of a reporting system though, so they can be utelized as an alternative to email subscriptions.... without adding too much bandwidth and CPU use to the site overall..... people shouldn't be reading threads in their news programs..... simple.... |

The feeds have only been around a little while, so I'm not using them yet, but I might consider it. I can see that some of the heavier posters will find it handy I possibly won't, but then I tend to post rather sporadically. |

personally I don't agree with the idea at all.... I think an e-mail subscription should be more than adequate.... but Jesper did point out some people may not have access to e-mail, and of course there are "live bookmarks" but I think the RSS feeds should serve ONLY as a notification system and not provide any ACTUAL content. providing actual posts just puts extra load on the server for no reason |

The RSS feeds for threads should pose less load on the server than the acutal HTML-based thread script... It will only cause extra load if someone decides to use both a Web browser and RSS reader at the same time for no reason at all.

FreeDos obviously you are dumb then.... becuase most news readers check the RSS Feeds every X Minutes.... so someone leaves their news reader running when they go to work... it does 16 thread loads for no fucking reason..... therefore, it should be reduced to a simple reporting system... if you wanna read a thread, open your fucking browser and go to it.... if you want a notification that a thread has been replied to, and are too fucking stupid to go get a free e-mail account, fine I'll give that to you in RSS but nothing more..... I think the idea of RSS is really stupid personally... but am humoring Jesper and you other people with your stuipd bookmark bull shit it already puts a big NEW Icon next to the thread and we will have e-mail subscriptions in the next beta.... that's not fucking good enough for you ? you have to have fucking RSS ? fine, but it's going to be used as a REPORTING tool, not as a goddamn alterative for you to read fucking threads... |

Most readers allow to turn auto-checking off. Also, Checking it every hour would be the same as doing it in a browser (if you're so determined). Many browsers (like Mozilla and Opera) already have auto-refereshing... or even checking the bookmarks for updates without rendering things. RSS on a board doesn't make complete sense, since RSS is for news, after all. |

yeah I agree with you, like I said, I don't even want it.... but Jesper insists on it.... so I'll compromise.... use it as a reporting tool, not an offline content providing tool..... |

Where can I find an explanation or information on using RSS feeds? There's nothing on the FAQ as-of-yet, so I was wondering if there is a thread explaining them or something. Thanks!

So why are you guys using RSS 0.3 and not 0.9 or 0.91? I tried opening the feeds, but my browser doesn't even recognize the fact that they are RSS feeds. Let alone the fact that they are just XML, it tries to download them. While on the flip side it recognised feeds from other sites fine. Slashdot for example, and even most blogs. I think you guys are missing a declaration in the header of the file or something of that nature to signal to the browser that the file it's grabbing is an RSS feed or at least an XML document. |

Because Jesper decided he should use Atom instead of RSS 2 for some reason.....

Originally posted by ErkDogYes. (I am aware that I answered this in another thread earlier on. I'll answer it here too for posterity.) I've said it before and I'll say it again: There's no consistent way to determine something so basic as the content of a post in RSS2.0 that will work in every feed reader. RSS2.0 allows you to plug in other modules, so the feed readers must all support it, and those modules do not even specify wether it's encoded or not, or in what format it is. Atom specifies its own fields and lays down the law up-front, so it's much easier for feed readers to support it. Atom is built for lots of meta data and/or full content. RSS2.0 isn't. It's as simple as that. |

also Yarx... the reason it downloads instead of displays is because the content type is appropriately set.... just like when you click on an .exe or .zip a download dialog opens... same thing w/ the RSS feeds.... that's why you right click and copy the URL and paste that URL into your news reader Jiz edit: That was one big typo XD (edited by Jizuko on 11-06-04 08:04 AM) |
