Here's one from MLSS: It seems that this guy can't decide whether to have an accent or not. Also...in the arcade version of Silent Scope, if you die from running out of health, you get a message that says "LIFE OVER". Maybe it's just bad grammar...or maybe it's their subtle way of telling the player to get a life. (edited by Mutation on 12-11-04 03:36 AM) |

What the hell, man. It happens because the Japanese don't use L or R, they use a combination of both. |

Originally posted by Davis So, in other words, that mistake happens for the same reason why things like "!!!111" happen, right? (actually, that was my other theory on this) (edit: Come to think of it, wasn't there a keyboard available for the Japanese NES (or was it SNES?) that had separate "L" and "R" keys? I think it was called the "Family Basic Keyboard" or something to that effect.) Originally posted by Davis Yeah, the L/R problem far predates video games. "We pray for MacArthur's erection" and the Eric Crapton Greatest Hits album are just two examples. |

Back on topic... I've found some unused code in the Mario Kart 64 ROM that refers to Luigi as "Luizi", Yoshi as "Yossy", and D.K. as "Donky", along with a couple of other odd driver names... |

actualy Mutation, alot of the stuff you've shown weren't really mistranslations. Go back to bed really means to go back to sleep Though, I do find it humorous that in Pokemon the sentence "PEOPLE CALL ME THE POKEMON PROF" gets in not one but two generations of games

Just had to post this: The Crapton Hits the Fan Yay Japanese! Back on-topic, I always liked "ONES WHO DOES HAVE NOT HAVE TRIFORCE CAN'T GO IN" from the original Legend of Zelda. As well as "No. 3 Triforce" from the Adventure of Link intro. (edited by Emptyeye on 12-12-04 02:33 PM) |

A couple of things I've found in the original Zelda: "All of treasures" in the info that shows up if you wait long enough at the title screen. "Please look up the manual for details" also in that info. |

Yeah, the entire Legend of Zelda intro (On NES; they fixed it up for the GameCube Collector's Disc) is messed up. "PRINCE DARKNESS ' GANNON '" (etc. etc. etc.) GO FIND THE " 8 " UNITS " LINK " TO SAVE HER." |

Why do so many Zelda games say "Piece of Heart" when they should say "Heart Piece"? Even some of the newer ones I've played have this mistake. (edited by Mutation on 12-17-04 02:35 AM) |

Because Piece of Heart is a part of gaming history. And sounds cooler than heart piece. And I believe it's mainly a translation error caused by taking Japanese grammar literally.

It probably translated that way, and they just thought "hey, that sounds good" and left it. If you're going to question Zelda's grammar, you should be asking why Zelda is the one it's named after when Link is the hero. |

Meh, I believe LoZ borrows heavily from celtic mythology, and that's partway where the name comes from.

well I jost noticed something pleasent by the quote "ARBOK failed to swallow a thing!" in Pokemon Fire Red. I'd rather not attempt to interperate that one if it's all the same to you

Bah. The Arbok used the move "Swallow." That's the text the game gives if you haven't used Stockpile since you the battle started or since you last used Swallow or Spit Up.
