Hello good people at Acmlm's Board! I'm trying to make a conversion of Super Mario Bros (the first one) for SMW via Lunar Magic. I changed some sprites, things were going fine, etc, etc. BUT now I am facing a problem: The modification of Mario sprites. SMW sprites works in a completely different way than the SMB1 ones. SMW's Mario uses 4 frames for walking but SMB1's uses just 3. There are more difficulties like the fact of SMW's Mario uses the same head GFX for all walking frames. I am not a hacker - just like to make modifications using the editors created by the real geniuses. Probably I will not be able to change Mario's sprites problem by myself and that's why I am posting this message: Is there an editor or information about how to solve my problem? Thanks! Macbee |

How do you even reach the internal graphics? I can see them, but not modify them. It dosen't let me. |

Download SMW+SMAS. It has Mario sprites that are changed and they have the same number of frames for everything

Actually, Mario's walking animation only uses 3 frames in SMW The first animation is his Standing Frame, then you have the walking Frame where his legs are spread the most (that sounds kinda dirty ), and in the third frame, he brings his feet together more. (although you are right about the his Head, it only has 1 frame for his walking animation ) @Alonguy: Btw, to edit Mario's Gfx, open Gfx32.bin in a Tile Editor (TLP, TileEd2002, YYCHR, etc.). Atma, you're probably right. The big problem about the walking GFX is that one of the frames uses the same sprite of Mario standing - and in Super Mario Bros.1 those are completely different Mario poses!

I can't really help you myself, sadly, but hopefully because you probably are the same Macbee who made the uniqe Super Mario Dream World you'll get this question answered and others(like me) will be able to use the data too, then Mario will never be the same again. Oh, and by the way, I do know my way around LM nicely and allways like to pester people about helping them, and the last time I saw you on the board, or one of the last times, anyway, you didn't know ExGFX, I could allways teach you. < |

I am trying to make my mario the SMB3 mario, and its sort of working. I have the walking a standing jump animation done, and I'm working on the others. Thats not my main priorty right now tho, I am working out glitches to get ready for a demo. Anikiti is also working on making his mario the SMB3 mario and I think he is finished it but I'm not sure.

It might not look too bad if you just used the SMW Mario, but with the palettes from SMB1 and maybe some small edits. It'd look like SMW's Mario in SMB1 style.

Don't use the original NES-SMB one except if you are a masochist and like being bashed by other people. NES GFX suck, and they suck even more one the SNES. Thanks to SMAS we have been prevented from a flood of the until now and I'm sure noone wants a change 'bout this. If you want to use the SMAS mario, go ahead. Whether or not it will look good is just a matter of palette in this case. |

No, he is most probably too stupid to find 256 colours graphics within a NES ROM. At least I think so orynider frequently surprised us negatively lately.

Hello! Someguy: Yes, I am the same Macbee from "Super Mario Dream World", hehe. Thanks for the compliments about this project, and I would love some ExGFX lessons!! Gnkkwinrul and Blackhole89: It may shock you but my project uses the NES graphics from 1985. The reasons? 1) Well, I played the orignal SMB a lot when I was a kid, zillions of years ago, and I am very nostalgic about that time.. 2) I believe that using the GFX from 1985 I will make people more interested in the hack. Some will love the Retro-feeling, and others will hate the obsolete-looking of it. But both will have a different experience, determined by the unusual visual of the hack. And I believe that playing something different is good sometimes, right? |

I like using old gfx sometimes because it makes the game a little more humorous (maybe having some newer and older stuff mixed together). But anyway, in the link below is an example of a good game with old style gfx, and also the gfx aren't crappy looking, because the person who made this game redrew the old style gfx with more colors (so actually macbee, you could use a lot of the gfx from this game). Note: This game is a PC game (no instalation needed). And also, to make it run in Fullscreen; after extracting the game, open "config.ini" and change "0" on the second line to "1". A Castlevania style Mario game with improved old style SMB1 Gfx (this is what "config.ini" looks like inside) [] fullsc=0 (change this 0 to a 1) (edited by Atma X on 10-22-04 10:01 AM) (edited by Atma X on 10-22-04 01:52 PM) |

Atma X: I already played that Castlevania-Mario game. The SMB1 GFX are beautiful, but in my hack I will do my best to let the game looking like the original Mario from 1985. Trashykins, thanks for the comment. I'm glad to know that my old and incomplete hack still gives some moments of fun to people. Iamhiro and Tailsixs, I believe that I solved my problem. There's no way to make a perfect rip of SMB1 sprites - I will have to create new sprites for Mario. Macbee PS: Can someone help me to find the program that inserts custom blocks on SMW? PS2: Is there a way to insert a character that acts exactly like the goombas from SMB1 and SMB3? |
