IF it happens that you want to bring up an old topic again, what is best? New thread or bumping old thread?

Depends. How old is the thread? Did the thread have valuable info you want to contribute to? Stuff like that. And then ofcourse, ask a mod or admin first and specify the thread.

Everytime some noob bumps an old thread it gets deleted. We should just have designated people who go around harvesting i.e. killing old threads. Like grim reapers for forums.

Thread bumping shouldn't be needed unless it's one of the ROM Hacking threads (and its subareas)... ...in most cases, you can simply make a new one, and if needed copy anything of value over, especially if the thread is bottom-of-the-forum old. |

Well, if someone wants to start a new thread, say they're finally coming out with their hack, it makes sense that they could have the option to mark their older thread for deletion. I'm not saying that they should have the power to delete it, but rather to indicate somehow that it is now a moot point.

there's no point in even asking this question... almost EVERY time a thread gets bumped it gets closed, even if it's a 4 paragraph post that adds signifigantly to the topic.... because for some reason the administration of this board feels that... after X amount of days a thread should not be replied to.... which personally I feel is bullshit... if you are replying to threads weeks old with "HAHHA OMG THAT WAS GREAT" that's bumping.... replying to a thread saying... Actually I agree with this person, because yada yada ya know if it's an ACTUAL post it's not considered bumping in my opinion.... |

Isnt that how it works anyway? I know that rule is there, but that's not as inforced as common sense.. or maybe I'm wrong. I dont have logs of every bump ever.. my impression was that many bumps were just stupid to begin with.. |

no 90% of the time threads get closed for "bumping" even if it's a 100 paragraph post... someone is like OMG THIS THREAD IS LIKE 2 WEEKS OLD BUMPING OMG I'M CLOSING IT |

I agree with you on that one. Let's say someone posts a thread with all sorts of really great hacking info. 2 months later, it's on page 6 and someone else replies to it. It'd just get closed, no matter what the reply, which doesn't make a lot of sense. If they just posted "OMG THAT'S SO KOOL I WANNA BE 1337 LIKE U HH", then delete their post, which would send the thread back to where it was before. However, if they replied with useful information related to the thread, maybe adding to or correcting the original post, then by all means leave it there. Not only is it good information, but it also brings the older posts back for new hackers to see (or old ones to remember ).

I can understand people bumping in rom hacking, for what Hyperhacker mentioned. But is it neccesairy to bump casual threads, regardless of wether you have something to contribute or not? |

I'll put it simply...if the bump pisses me off...it's closed...if it doesn't or I'm lazy...it stays open. I think a lot of staffers go by that principle. Very vague, but it's true. |

I dunno, if a newb is bumping a shitload of old threads just to be a little shit, I see the rationale in disciplining the person. But in my view you're just wasting your time closing the old threads. Part of the reason a thread goes down the list is that people lose interest in it. That, as opposed to something like the gamefaqs petitions forum, where your topic literally has to be bumped to stay alive and be heard. It's really true here that people only tend to look at the first few threads for their posting pleasure. Most of the time I only look at the first one, and maybe the next few sometimes. If someone bumps one thread, it will likely just continue to move down the list as before, so I don't see why you should make a big deal out of it. Any halfway intelligent person will eventually figure out that bumped threads are essentially dead, and will usually yield a small, short burst of activity, if that. I think the attitude toward's bumping here is formed on the basis that people like to look at something new most of the time. I hate this board when the same threads tend to stagnate in General discussion or Craziness domain. It's all about entertainment value. (edited by MathOnNapkins on 10-25-04 02:43 AM) |

Was there ever a good reason for making a rule against bumping in the first place? Most of the posters in this thread seem to think that closing a bumped thread serves no useful purpose. I'd agree. |

the problem is we could have some idiot start bumping threads that are 6+ months old and thus all the recent stuff gets shoved down...but then again, closing a bump thread does not prevent another thread from being bumped...which is what boards that do self-cleaning do... but anyways, a thread that is bump should be conditioned and not be automatically closed...so, I do agree with Jizuko |

Darwin's "theory" works on boards as well... Survival of the fittest. The threads that are good survives. The ones that are bad dies. (If mankind tries to resurrect the dead threads, it will die again, unless the climat has changed to it's favour.)

The problem for me is that most of the threads have "NEW" next to them. Even ones from many months ago. I take one look at the new then I look through it and realize that it's from 4 months ago. And threads that are really "new", there's only a few of them. |
