Bleh, I haven't listened to much new music for ages, and I'm starting to feel music-starved. I've gone through other threads on here looking for ideas, and downloaded a few things, but... I need more... MORE!!! And I'm sure you guys know of a bunch of really good music that I might be interested in... So, I was wondering, what kind of music would you recommend somebody else listen to right at the moment? My tastes are reasonably broad, but I am not a huge fan of hip-hop, nor am I particularly big on metal. I will listen to both of those, but generally I don't all that much. Stuff I've already downloaded on "recommendations" (other posts) on this forum include music by Modest Mouse, and Snow Patrol. And I enjoyed that stuff, it was good So, can anybody recommend any artists I should investigate right now? And if you can, can you recommend a song by them, that you think is their best song? I'll recommend one for you guys too. I recommend the John Butler Trio. They're an Australian band, I think from Perth, but I'm not sure. I don't know really how to describe it, other than it's Rock, with perhaps folksy or country influences. I recommend the song "Pickapart" from their album "Three". What music would you recommend for me? |

Augie March!!! Australians, from Melbourne. Fantastic muci, poetic and brilliant lyrics. Folksyish rock music I guess? Hard to describe really. They're not necessarily imemdiately catchy but they slowly wrap themselves around your brain and don't ever let go. Flash-based E-card with songs and video. (edited by Arwon on 10-13-04 06:29 AM) |

Alrighty, but you know what my taste in music is like Taryn so you come forewarned Bond - Explosive Bond are a string quartet who fuse classical music with more modern types of music, like rock and dance. I like Explosive because it sounds like an intro theme to a particularly epic RPG Vanessa Mae - Storm She's a world famous Violinist who have been doing what Bond are currently doing for years now, Storm's pretty cool, like a battle theme or something. The Streets - Dry your eyes Ok so it's hip hop, but it's epic hip hop, and one of my fave hip hop songs of all time Girls Aloud - Sound of the Underground They're everything you HATE Taryn, they're a girl band, but hear them out, this song is particularly funky in my opinion. Electric Six - Gay Bar Especially notable for the video, this is Rock/Pop at it's silliness, just you try and get it out of your head McFly - Obviously Yes they're a boy band, but they play their own instruments and they have this Beach Boys vibe to them. Busted - She wants to be me (or Air hostess) McFly's predessesors, the british Good Charlotte, make of that what you will, but I like their sense of of humour. That should do you for now, if you do listen to any of them, tell me what you |

OK, here goes The Thrills - So Much for the City The released their second album Let's Bottle Bohemia recently, but the first one is much better. Bohemia is worth getting too though. Tom Waits - Real Gone Real good Belle And Sebastian - Tigermilk Not a new album or artist, but really good. Give them a listen if you haven't heard them before. All their albums are actually good, but Tigermilk is the best of them. Franz Ferdinand - Franz Ferdinand If you haven't listened to this already, you're missing something awesome. GET NOW! Haloblack - Tension Filter Pretty good industrial kinda rock. Some songs are totally awesome, some suck Still worth a listen though. The Hives - Veni Vidi Vicious Go Sweden You've probably already heard Tyrannosaurus Hives, but Veni Vidi Vicious is much better. Their first album Barely Legal is pretty good too, but not as good as their latest two. Rammstein - Reise, Reise I had my doubts when getting this, but it ended up being very good. Recomended Joy Division I doubt you haven't heard of them, but if you haven't, get both of their albums. Both five-stars, in my eyes --- And now I'll just suggest some good songs, no explanation; XTC - Helicopter, Statue of Liberty, Sgt Rock | The Killers - Mr Brightside, Jenny Was A Friend of Mine | Mudhoney - Touch Me I'm Sick, Hate The Police | Mattias Alkberg BD - Fyllskalle (SWE) | Kinks - You Really Got Me | Guided By Voices - Everywhere With Helicopter, I Am A Scientist | The Go-Betweens - Lee Remick* | Gang Of Four - Damaged Goods | The Armoury Show - Castles In Spain. * One of those perfect pop songs. Catchy and awesome, get it. -- That's all I can think of right now. Might add more later. |

A suggestion of sorts, might be going back and finding somgs that you enjoyed from when you were younger. That's what I am currently doing right now. I started with 1998 (my grad year) went to 1999, and then backwards. I'm working on 1994 right now. I'm not getting every single song from that time, I'm just going by a set list right now. I'm also getting a few songs that I didn't like back then, and it turns out that I like now. Especially since I wasn't a big rock fan back then, but I am one now. | |||

Hehe, I've been downloading some J-Pop too, Hiryuu. I have a little Bonnie Pink, some Megumi Hayashibara, etc... and I haven't listened to it yet, but I downloaded a new Utada Hikaru song to have a listen Somehow, it would suprise me to hear her music get a commercial release here though... Elmo -- haven't heard of most of what you mentioned, but I *have* heard of The Streets, and I have a bit of their music. I remember their previous album. As for finding things I enjoyed from when I was younger, I've been trying that too. Unfortunately, a lot of the stuff I liked was... I guess not mainstream back then, so now... bloody obscure. Obscure = hard to find. And another recommendation from me now: The Cat Empire -- "Hello Hello". I don't know what to call the Cat Empire's music. It has a blend of genres in it, so... all I can suggest is listen to this song, and then try to avoid saying "Hello Hello" later. |

Catch 22 if you combine jazz and punk, you get Catch 22. They're my favorite band, but I dunno what that means, if anything. |

Hmm...What is one that you would enjoy...Not into metal or hip-hop... Therion - Son of the Sun. Mofuckin' operatic. Also, I'd suggest Sigh if you're up for some interesting sounding Japanese music. Good luck finding it. w00d5b17ch is hard to find, but well worth it. |

I'm thinking about making a few album purchases later, cause my music collection is sad, but I wanna have a good listen to some things first. |

Taryn - My fave "The Thrills" Song is "Santa Cruz", although "So much for the City" is nice, as is "Whatever happened to Corey Haim?" More suggestions, William Orbit - Adagio for Strings - As found on the "Kevin and Perry"'s sountrack, this is a nice bit of Euphoric Trance based on that track by "Barber" Catherine Hatherley - Summer - A first solo outing from the attractive one from Ash, it's not to bad, if a little different Ash - Orpheus & Meltdown - Two songs from their latest album. Used to great effect on the "SHaun of the Dead" soundtrack may I add, plus I LOVE Ash Feeder - Sweet 16 & Just a Day - Some Indie-type pop, you may have heard of these too, one's pretty old (It's the track that introduced me to Feeder, it's on the Gran Turismo-UK Soundtrack) and the other is newer. Jurgen Vries feat. Cmc - The Opera Song - A Trance song? With Charlotte Church in it? Yep, but it's catchy as hell Catatonia - Don't need the Sunshine & Road Rage - How could I not have suggested them before. My Fave band OF ALL TIME. Fact. One's an album track, I like as it's mellow, and the second one is one of their most famous singles. Cerys Mathews - Weightless Again, Chardonnay and Louisianna - Compare these songs with the band above - it's the same singer, but this is what Rehab does to you, still, I LOVE Cerys' new direction. It's very Bluegrassy so it may not be to your taste though |

Originally posted by Uncle Elmo Their other older song on GT, Shade, is a great song too. My music taste is not as accessed as these guys, but you should try out Orbital and Leftfield, two wonderful electronic-based groups. Also try David Gray- he's a great singer with some beautiful songs. The aforementioned Streets is good, I wouldnt say he was hip-hop, more garage based. A very good grime artist is Dizzie Rascal, he isnt as well known in America but he has a lot more talent than most American hip-hop atrists of his age and experience. |

Smoking Popes: Pretty good pop-punk, but the singer sings like a lounge singer. Good luck trying to find their stuff, though... I think most of their post-"Born to Quit" material's out of print. (The lead singer went and got hisself saved, breaking up the band.) Living End: They usedta be named after a Stray Cats song, nahmean youhear. Sounds: Obvious Blondie influences, but "Seven Days A Week" is three minutes of creamy goodness. Also "Living in America", "Reggie", "Dance With Me", "Mine for Life" (wait, that's half the album). Paris Texas - "Bombs Away"... also that damn good. Let me also second the following recommendations. * XTC * Electric Six * Killers * Gang of Four |

Originally posted by drjayphd Yeah, I have some of the Living End's stuff. I like their old stuff better than their new stuff, but it's all pretty samey after a while with them anyways.
