Yeah, he had pneumonia, and cancer. In the end, the pneumonia got him.

Mind you, he was a strong guy (although I think we used the term "stubbon old bugger" at one point.) See, when we got into the hospital at, what, 9AM, he was focusing all his energy on breathing, and not, say, anything else. After coaching him on for a bit, we said our goodbyes etc and waited. Twelve hours later, he was still fighting!

So, yeah. He finally finished at about 11PM. It wasn't very fun, but we decided to look on the bright side (No more pain, suffering, hospital visits...) and move on.

From the looks of things, we're going to be allright. Dad seems to have planned ahead to keep us financially stable, and he had a list in his stuff of things we were to do etc. etc.

So, yeah.

This sucks.

Christ, man. I wish there was something I could say that would mean anything.

Good luck, take care. Don't ever forget how much you rock.

my old man

16 years old
during the depression
I'd come home drunk
and all my clothing-
shorts, shirts, stockings-
suitcase, and pages of
short stories
would be thrown out on the
front lawn and about the
street.
my mother would be
waiting behind a tree:
"Henry, Henry, don't
go in. . .he'll
kill you, he's read
your stories. . ."
"I can whip his
ass. . ."
"Henry, please take
this. . .and
find yourself a room."
but it worried him
that I might not
finish high school
so I'd be back
again.
one evening he walked in
with pages of
one of my short stories
(which I had never submitted
to him)
and he said, "this is
a great short story."
I said, "o.k.,"
and he handed it to me
and I read it.
it was a story about
a rich man
who had a fight with
his wife and had
gone out into the night
for a cup of coffee
and had observed
the waitress and the spoons
and forks and the
salt and pepper shakers
and the neon sign
in the window
and then had gone back
to his stable
to see and touch his
favorite horse
who then
kicked him in the head
and killed him.
somehow
the story held
meaning for him
though
when I had written it
I had no idea
of what I was
writing about.
so I told him,
"o.k., old man, you can have it."
and he took it
and walked out
and closed the door.
I guess that's
as close
as we ever got.

Wow...*hugs* I'm glad that you are taling this so well. Remember, celebrate life, that's what he would have wanted anyway. He was strong, and that shows within you and the rest of your family.

When my grandmother died when I was about 10 or so, I didn't cry. I stood in the back. About 8 or so years later, I finally cried for her....to each is own.

Sorry to hear man. I've had this expeirence with my best friends father a few years back.

Not that words coming from me probably help in anyway, but, hope everything just comes back together for you and hope to see you move on alright.

Just wish you the best.

I've never had my dad or mom die, but I had a few very close friends get killed, so I somewhat know what you feel, probably. You are handling it strongly. Wish there was something I could say... everything looks like it'll be ok, man.

I know how it is, your dad died after a long fight, unlike my dad he died after the first twelve hours. It's not fun, sitting in the hospital with your loved one hoping to god he/she won't die, I went through that on Christmas Eve of 2000....My dad got jumped in good old downtown Detroit (this pklace fucking sucks) and I knew there was no way he was gunna live, but hell you can't sit there crying forever, he/she'd want you to move on, and I think it awesome how you got along well after his death, I took my dad's death bad, he was 48, he had more time....But when you think about him don't think of how he died, think of the good times you had...F**k now I'm crying god d**n....

My dad's been in the hospital 5 weeks now, and it was pretty serious in the beginning (burns, stroke, heart attack, blood infection) but he did, thankfully, get better.

With all the stress and pain I've been going through, I can't imagine going through it like that and then seeing him die. My heart goes out to you. Have the strength to get past this.

Same with my grandfather, when I was 5. I guess I was too young to know the extent then, but since he and I weren't really them close. I did cry a year or so later when it sank in.

As for your father, my condolences. He fought hard, but unfortunately you can't fight fate.

Sorry to hear that... I guess that if he was suffering, though, at least he will be free of the pain now, as you said.
