So I finally got around to downloading the mobile phone game FF7: Before Crisis.

I've only played the first two missions, which are quite short, but here's a rundown of the game so far.

* You go through endless legalese and agreements and then download the game. Y500 (just over $4 US) per month, plus more if you want FF7 ringtones and graphics. It's too bad you can't take screenshots, or I'd post them.

* Once you load up the actual game, you get a choice of four Turks agents, two male, two female. Give your agent a name and the mission will start.

* You're equipped with a gun (one of those FF7 popguns that does 7 HP of damage), but there's magic too. Before the first mission, you head for Turks HQ and if you attempt to "create materia", the phone's camera will come on, prompting you to take a picture. "Huh?" thought I as I snapped a picture of a nearby book. The phone then mingled all the colors together, forming a kind of average gray color, and informed me that I had a Quake materia. OK, let's get another one. This time I snap something with a mainly white background and get a Cure materia. Ah ha... the color of what you take a picture of determines your materia! Remembering that lightning was effective in the "real" FF7, I find something yellow and it does indeed give me a Bolt-2 (Thundara?) materia.

* On to the actual game. A resistance group -- maybe the Avalanche, they don't say -- is shouting "Justice for the Shinra!" and resolving to crush the oppressive corporation. You, the Turks recruit in your spiffy black suit, chase after these insurgents and take them on in one-on-one gun battles. You move with the directional pad and shoot with the center button. Another button activates your magic. So far it's mainly been two guys running around a square screen shooting at each other, with me victorious each time; you have 200 HP and they have much less. After the first mission, Tseng and some Turks higher-up are debating the effectiveness of sending a rookie out there, but we know how unfounded their fears are.

* That's it so far. Each of the first two missions has been abot five minutes each -- ideal for train rides and the like. We'll see how more complicated it gets.

Anyone else have this game?

I don't use cell phones so I wont be playing this game. But it does sound spiffy though. Take a picture of a bible and see if you get Holy.

My cell phone lacks a camera. Tragic, because that way of making materia sounds really cool. Not sure if I'd pay $4/month just for that, but still.

Well, the cost is indeed outrageous, but I imagine I'll be done with the game in a month or two.

When I downloaded Tetris a year or so ago, I paid about $3 per month, and on the first day of the second month, the phone prompted me to re-register and download again. I decided I didn't want the game anymore, but didn't notice until five months later that I was still being charged for it! Turns out I had to actually go to the game maker's i-mode site and actually cancel the service. You'd think that for an old game like Tetris, $3 would get you the application in perpetuity, wouldn't you?

Indeed, making materia is the nice selling point of this game. Can you get any summon materia, or is it all just magic?

Summon materia are red, right? I took a picture of something red and got a Fira materia, so I'm guessing that the colors determine elements. The Turks weren't exactly famous for their Summoning ability, were they?

BTW, you can approach the missions in two ways: walking around freely, gathering information, and then going after the enemy, or in a more direct, script/dialogue-oriented, mission style. The former seems to be more fun, with Square throwing in the occasional sop to those who've been living under rocks and not knowing about materia and Midgar and the like.

Ah, Found the FAQ. Square have a kickass system for making materia, I hope they use the eyetoy for someting just like it in the future.

That guy's FAQ doesn't seem to cover much.

I'm wondering if the missions are easier or harder depending on who you select as your protagonist. I took the lobg-blue-haired guy.
