A small correction.

Whenever I get bored, I...
1) Annoys someone on MSN/AIM/#acmlm
2) forces somone on #acmlm to play Gunbound
3) Starts The sims 2 and then make some mansion of some sort.

But honestly, find a RPG you hadn't played then try get into it.

... no no no no no no. Fantastically awesome speed, can usually one hit KO if holding a choice band to deal massive damage to most teams, since it's also faster than just about everything. Aerodactyl is awesome, not sucky... Methinks you need more experience in the subject Plus this one is fully effort-trained towards attack and speed and has a speed-boosting personality that doesn't detract from attack... What's not to like? I ask you. What is not to like?

Perhaps, perhaps not. A simple inputting of stats in to a damage calculator with optimum defense and attack stats in this situation says Double Edge will deal between 150 and 176 damage. Starmie's maximum HP in Gold is 323 - thusly, it will usually be a two hit KO, so assuming that you switch Starmie in, which is likely, Starmie will usually never be able to attack, considering Aerodactyl is much faster and wins second turn. This also assumes that both are at max attack and defense - this is unlikely due to the fact that individual values governing how high a stat can be in the end are randomly picked when caught, though I have taken precautions to ensure Aerodactyl is at very near max attack (Resetting until I got a very, very favorable Aerodactyl, thank you). This also does not factor in the chance of a critical hit, which if landed would ensure your defeat. And, since it was your Starmie against a team of Aerodactyls, it is almost certain that you will be defeated at some point even if it isn't the first one. This of course ignores the fact that it would be incredibly stupid of me to leave Aerodactyl in against a Starmie in the first place - I'd far more likely swap it for a Blissey, take whatever feeble damage you do, and use Toxic next turn. Since your Starmie has nothing to recover status, you're pretty much pwned in this situation. You could in turn swap out but barring a steel-type you'd still have an 85% chance of being Toxic'd, and if it was a steel type, Blissey could still take the physical attack and, since it was so expected, use Counter for a practically guaranteed one hit KO.

And now it all makes sense. *clouds part*

Geez, I dunno if I'd want to watch a Pokemon tournament on TV - I'd probably be lost in the strategy after 5 minutes.

Well, it's not really THAT difficult. The hardest part, really, is predicting what your opponent will do next and responding in a way that give yourself an advantage... Which of course works in reverse... Which in ITSELF works in reverse... Say you know your opponent has a Dugtrio. You've got something out that would fall easily to the highly defensive Skarmory, which you know he also has. You figure he's probably going to switch in Skarmory, so you're going to switch in Magneton, which has Magnet Pull to prevent Skarmory from escaping since it's steel-type and Magneton could quickly one hit KO it. But then you think that he expects this and will switch in Dugtrio instead of Skarmory, and Dugtrio's Arena Trap prevents things that can't fly from switching out, therefore effectively trapping Magneton and getting rid of your main threat to Skarmory... But you've got a move on the poke you have out that's good against Dugtrio. But they know this, and using it if they switch in Skarm will ensure your defeat for some reason (I haven't thought up why yet ) So what do you do?

Of course, I haven't netbattled in a long time so my example is probably very outdated and counterable now.

Only thing is...Dugtrio isn't that good defense wise...his only saving grace is his speed...so hope for a good EARTHQUAKE or something like ROCK SLIDE for the flying and hope that does some damage (I raised a Dugtrio back when I first start on Blue in '98...they're not bad...but you don't see a lot of them...it's definitely an UnderUsed...)...

Starmie taking a 120 Double-Edge from a Rock/Flying isn't anything special...even though Aero has high Attack strength...it doesn't have that extra boost like a Pidgeot or a Blissey or a Snorlax would have. Fuck...have Curse and a Snorlax with Rest...omg...no one will win against you. Curselax.

But as for Starmie...eh...I was being a bit over-the-top with it...Aero still has the speed advantage (but Starmie isn't half bad either) and can do some decent damage with attacking versus Starmie's relatively weak defense...but Star's a good BoltBeam user and it's Special Attack is decent. A singular Ice Beam should be enough to torch an Aero...and if it doesn't...hey...there's a freeze chance.

Do not forget the ability Recover...and Starmie also has a chance of having the ability NATURAL CURE...which is hella sweet if I ever get status'd in battle...all I have to do is switch out and presto...problem solved.

Not saying Aero's all bad...in fact the ancient pokemon have their perks...but out of them I'd probably choose Omanyte...I've got a thing for water- and ice- types. :\

I didn't say Dugtrio I had good defense, I said it can easily OHKO a Magneton which can't really defend against it, nor can it switch out. Back when Magneton was considered THE Skarm-killer, you saw a lot of Dugtrios but usage has gone down. Anyway. you seem to be thinking that RuSa is played exactly the same as GSC but with a few more changes. Curselax isn't too used unless usage has gone up since I left, but at any rate it's very easily stopped. In GSC I wouldn't be caught dead with an Aerodactyl; when I played it I used Umbreon/Skarmory/Misdreavus/Blissey/Cloyster/Donphan. Yeah, 3x Fighting weakness. ****ing sue me.

4. :\

See and I never used a Skarmory...didn't see the advantage. :\ I always had an ice or water type that could take it out fast.

Old-school master that hasn't caught on...I still remember the days back in Red when I could get a Ninetails with FLAMETHROWER, FIRE SPIN, TOXIC, FIRE BLAST. No move Fire Spin...with Toxic...and Fire Blast...or Confuse Ray in it's place for something even...Hell even Cloyster was good with Clamp.

Now you can move.

Well. Skarmory has very high Defense, gets Whirlwind to cancel stat uppers, gets Toxic (as a lot of things do ), is immune to Toxic (and all other poison moves, of course), and only Fire and Electric moves are strong against it.

Meanwhile, Blissey has very high Special Defense, and has ridiculously high HP. Only Fighting moves are strong against it, it gets Toxic, Softboiled, and Heal Bell. Yeah. HEAL BELL. Wakes up teammates who have used rest, and effectively counters Toxic. Plus, it cures Freeze and Burn. But mainly Freeze. <3. It also gets a host of other, less important moves that benefit the party (Light Screen to help Skarm, mainly).

The point of course is that they compliment each other very, very well, making them staples on many a GSC team. Blissey, though, is considered somewhat cheap, and Skarmory is as well to a lesser extent, but few are bothered by this. The point is that they're both very defensive and greatly aide teams they're in, and work wonderfully together.

Anyway, on to RBY: I always prefered Rapidash with Agility/Fire Spin/Toxic/Rest. Flamethrower and Fire Blast on the same thing is rather silly, though, as is any two moves of the same type that aren't used completely differently. I also used Zapdos with Fly/Drill Peck/Toxic/Thunderbolt and a host of other Toxic-using things

For Blissey...two-hit KO with something like Mind-Reader/Lock-On/Vital Throw and Fissure, if it lasts that long...but I dunno if that rule's changed past GSC...it'd kill anything other than flying types.

Skarmory flies...it is weak against Ice and it should be weak against Rock...but the Rock against high defense might not do it much good.

And yea...I've read a few guides...not a very active gamer in that I don't play with an actual Ru/Sa cart or even my old Gold and Crystal anymore...

I dunno...I'm not in it for the competitiveness usually...just a good time suck. :\

True, true, but if you see any fighting type you typically switch out, or make a quick judgement as to whether it can OHKO you or not and if it can't use Counter if you have it. Main problem relating to that is Misdreavus, with Mean Look + Perish Song.

But it is also steel-type, negating it's ice and rock weaknesses, and adding fire.

am i the only one who finds Gligar to be good as one of those "pain in the ass" Pokemon? As a flying/ground type he's really only truly weak againt water and ice, i beleive....perhaps rock too, correct me if I'm wrong. Teach him Toxic, Earthquake, and a few others (perhaps steelwing, his move set IS limited ;_, mixed witht he fact that hes a bastard to take out (...trust me. someone with a level 75 Gligar nearly made my Walrein his bitch...until I used icebeam ) Gligar is one big pain in the ass. of course, nothing is more annoying then a level 100 Linoone. Agiain, I was up against one. Thunder, Surf, Flamethrower, and i think Earthquake.....and you gotta see the defence on that SOB. he needs to die along side Altaria, which is too good to actualy use correctly
