So, as the thread title says, I'm going to install Windows XP soon (Probably on Sunday). However, I need to know if there are things I should do to help making the install a success. I'm really tired of having a buggy computer, so I want that my switch to XP help....

Make sure you have your drivers handy in case you need them. XP detects a lot of stuff, but it's good to have drivers available if you find something important that isn't detected and installed automatically. This goes for all OS's though... |

-Use NTFS, it's faster and more reliable. However, you might want to leave a small (~32MB) FAT32 partition with an old version of DOS and some recovery tools on it, if you don't trust your computer's stability. -Before installing, download the updates. At the very least, get those Blaster patches. Copy them to a CD or disk and install them before EVER connecting to the Internet. Without them, you can get infected really fast. -If you forget to write down the serial #, lose the box, etc, don't panic, you can eject the CD when it asks and copy it from there. It should be written right on the disc. Just put it back in before you hit Enter. |

When you are installing windows XP, you will come across this screen: File System Screen You have two choices NTFS and FAT32. NTFS is the better choice and many windows users say the same as it is more stable and supports larger files (if you will be doing work with files that big). Also, you might want to read this site's WinXP installation guide to get a feel of what you will be faced with: WinXP install guide by Black Viper (edited by neotransotaku on 10-07-04 05:53 PM) |

And this is a general tip, it can be a good idea to have at least two diffrent partions. Some people have over five. Indeed, hell even the 2000 server version is easy to install. However it can happen that it dosen't detect your hardware parts. On the computer I installed 2000 server on it did find Sound card but couldn't identify it. It can also be a good idea to install SP2 right after installing Windows XP. And also run Windows update. (and Hyperhacker is so right about the blaster patch...) I just say, NTFS is better faster and get's less fragmented. I wouldn't say it's the best file system, but it's the best file-system Windows can use. FAT32 is crap compared to NTFS. I've read Black Viper's guide, and it says that if I already have a partitions, I should delete it. So, I'M most likely to already have one, but I have a question: If I delete that partition, does that mean I'll lose all my data (Because I want this to happen, I'm burning my files at the moment, anyway)

You gotta have the Sasser update... Sasser CAN be a real pain in the ass. And there's no exceptions: As soon as you get connected, you get Sasser.

And maybe you should install the Blaster Worm patch, because this worm sucks and shuts down your PC automatically.

Or just disconnect your computer from the Internet while you install. After you're done, make sure that all your Firewall settings are where you want it. Then, plug it in and update.

Originally posted by DarkSlaya And keep it clean ... My XP currently needs less than 50 seconds loading from switching the computer on, including typing a long password at the login screen. I want to keep it short like that for a longer time. So make sure only to load the neccessary stuff in the auto-start folder or msconfig, removing unused programs regularly and updating your antivirus and firewall at least twice per week ... and performing a virus check once a week. |

That's what I planned to do. But for me, viruses and hackers aren't the biggest threat... My sister is. So of course, I didn't gave her admin powers And for now, it takes less than 45 seconds from when I hit the power button, until I'm logged in and everything that starts at startup is loaded. And it takes like, maybe 2 seconds from the login screen to my completly loaded account. |
