Uh, check so the speakers are properly connected. When mine aren't I can loose a soundchannel, get alot of distortion or just not hear anything on one speaker

First, isn't this in the wrong forum? (it fits better in Hardware/software)

Second, do you know what sound card you have. (h

What type of sound card do you have on your computer ?
Post, if it is an onboard sound chip, like AC97 on some mainboards or if it is an PCI thingy (Creative Labs, Terratec or another facturer) and the model.

As for MP3s, if you have equalizer options (check the sound options in your Control Panel) which may have en- or disabled a bass boost setting or the pitches are set too high

I've had this problem on a friend's comp with an Asus nForce2 board:

When you install new audio drivers from nVidia or from Windows Update, the drivers are the WRONG ones - Asus (and many other manufacturers) fucked up in the hardware ID and made it the same as the nVidia boards with the SoundStorm audio. This is VERY likely your problem (be it Intel or AMD, it happens cross-platforms, using the AC97 for Realtek, etc etc).

Go to your motherboard MFG's website and download THEIR audio drivers for your EXACT motherboard (like if you have an A7N8X, get THOSE, not an A7N8X-EE). That will probably solve it.
