Okay, now I've gotten to see the whole thing, I'll ask this again.

Has anybody here seen Gainax's anime Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi ?

I've finally seen the whole thing, and have completed my box set. All in all, I found it to be a pretty enjoyable series, but in a weird kinda mood-swingy way (if that makes sense).

The series alternates between being very mellow and almost depressing, to very manic and fast paced and silly. I liked the silly bits more than the depressing bits.

All in all, it seemed to be another series by Gainax based around growing up... but with a lot of crazy stuff thrown in. Like Excel Saga, it is considered a Parody Anime, although apparently it isn't really much like Excel Saga otherwise.

I liked the Hollywood episode the best, with the various Terminator references and even a Back to the Future reference!!

So, who here has seen it, and what did you think of it? What was your favorite episode?

ChibiTaryn,

Strange. I just watched the first two episodes last weekend. My friend came home from college for fall break with those DVDs in hand. Again, I watched the first two episodes, but couldn't passed them. I don't know what came over me; I just didn't like it that much. It just seemed so flippantly silly in parts and yet totally boring in others: I couldn't catch on. Perhaps when my friend comes home for Thanksgiving, I can bear a couple more episodes.

EDIT: Oh yeah! The one other thing that got to me: The characters had thick southern accents! I thought this was supposed to take place in Japan.

The characters are from Osaka, which has a pronounced accent.

Clearly the idiots that dubbed the show think that a Southern accent is prolly the best alternative to an Osakan accent....

idiots.

The show is pretty good, but it is.. as I have described "Manic-Depressive". One minute is is manic, ridiculous, fast paced and silly. Then it's depressive, slow and emotional.

...And I like the third episode better than the second one

In the end, it all makes a coherent story...

I havnt seen episodes 3-5 (i think those are the ones I havnt seen) but from the ones I've seen my favorite would have to be the one where they were making fun of pokemon, dragon ball z, and many other "childish" animes, the one where the little monster gets Army's panties (episode 6 I believe)

Yea, I hear ya. They do that with every show that has an character from Osaka. Look at Kenshin and Azamunga Daioh. It's really dumb.

I was thinking about starting a thread about this, but I figured me and Kirbynite were the only ones who watched it.

I like the accents, I mean what other way could we understand that the characters had an Osaka accent, make them sound British? I dont think so.

Ive seen all the episodes and I love them all, but the episode where Sashi trains with the Panda to fight that old man was Hilarious! It had Fist of the North Star, DBZ, Bruce Lee, and a lot of other cool stuff.

The DBZ / Bruce Lee episode was indeed awesome.

I've only seen this show on g4 though, and I'm sure the subbed version is better. (Probably better speech, and no effing 5 commercials or something)

Well, I watched it in Japanese w/ subtitles, but then I watch all my anime that way.

However the DVD had the southern accents in bits of it, and they were just.... I did find them annoying. Of course, it just sounded more comical than anything to me really...

I haven't seen all of it but the couple of episodes I watched it was pretty random. I couldn't get into it that much since I missed most of it I think. I have no idea how many episodes there are though. I did watch the episode dealing with Hollywood. I liked that one the best.

I have to admit... The southern accent felt a bit weird, and I eventually realized that it was supposed to be that "Osaka" accent thing. I felt like I was looking at a Naota-like character speaking like some cowboy. But.. after a while.. it kinda grew on me, and I actually liked it. It was a really different thing for me.

My favorite episodes are Combine! and Flutter!, the futuristic and highschool episodes. There's just too much to list how awesome those episodes were.

Yea, my only complaint is that the series was pretty short... They easily could have made it at least 20 episodes without it getting old just by adding more random worlds and what not. As for the accents, I personaly thought they were hillarious...

The futuristic one was the Space Abenobashi with the Giant Robots right?
That was the first one I watched, and I loved it!

Oh and the character seemed ALOT like Naota to me, but that just made me like it more.

And I just obtained the original copies of all the episodes.. And it's kinda neat to see what things were taken out to make time, and what subbed things were said. Most of the time, the dubbed words sound a lot better than the subtitles...
