My new layout in progress.
Total file size is 274KB (JPEGs compressed at quality level 4 in Photoshop). It's stretchable horizontally and vertically, and has a width of 687 pixels. (The titlebar resizes itself to the available space like the one I have now - in fact, it is the one I have now. ) Yes, the links are going to lead somewhere. They're all one big image, I intend to use image maps to make the links in order to save space. The Shippo pic on the left acts as an EXP meter, 'bouncing' off the bouncy thing at 0 and hitting the 1up at 100. I plan to add more sprites, these will all be part of the same image so file size shouldn't increase substantially.

So, I have a few things to ask...
1) Is 274K too big? How can I make it smaller without it looking like crap?
2) How do I get rid of those black lines between table cells? I generally use a series of divs to make things show up in the right place, but that's complicated and breaks in some browsers. *Cough*XK*Cough*
3) Like it?

I like the sprites. And at least it's clear you know it will look familiar to some. But yes, 274kb is alittle too much, but I have no idea on how to make it smaller. Try PNGs, maybe.

It'll be smaller when you butcher it up, believe me. Right now it's a screenshot of a full layout, later on in the code you'll have like 1px wide and maybe 12px high images that will repeat. Stuff like that. But yeah, 274kb is too big.

I also would recommend you to keep the layout width to a max of 600 width (that ofcourse, can stretch sideways for more coverage if people have higher res). That way, it fits better for smaller resolutions.

It's like a JDavis layout with Inuyasha and Yoshi's Island sprites.

I'd probably try simplifying it a tad...but then I've always tried to keep my layouts relatively simple...I just don't like them being cluttered.

It's a bit cluttered, but that might look different when you actually finish it.
Why do you have this huge black space on the right? It looks very bad (and odd), compared to the other, more colorful, parts.

Er, what do you mean? I wasn't planning to put in any tiny repeating images.

Yeah, I was trying to do that, but then I'd need to nuke the entire right side or have a really tiny text field. Then not only would it be crowded, but I'd have to get rid of the links. So I tried to keep it as close to 600 as possible.
The big black part at the side is empty space. I couldn't think of a way to fill it up while still being compatible with low resolutions. (But I just did think of a way, and did it. I've re-uploaded the pic.)

Now, after some conversions... *Converts some pics to PNG, wherever it helps the size*

Total file size: 201K. However, if I remove the images responsible for filling in the black spots (one uses a bg colour, not an image), it drops to 98.6K. So what's the vote? Should I keep the black spot and leave it at a small size? Sacrifice bandwidth for looks and fill in the empty space? Or is it too much either way?

BTW, interesting side note: See that gradient in the top right? 454 bytes as PNG, width of 29 pixels. Guess how much if I shrink it to 1 pixel wide? 454 bytes. Gotta love compression!

Also I still need to know how to fix the FREAKING BLACK LINES!

I think that for the black lines, if there made by tables, you need to do "cellspacing=0 cellpading=0".

Thanks! Have 25 bucks. (I still get one next to the links though, probably because it's using a BG colour instead of an image. Easy enough to fix, I suppose.)

And no, no Ranma sprites this time.

There's no GIFs in this picture other than Shippo. The Inuyasha logo is part of the top, which is a poorly-encoded JPEG. Making it a better quality would make it bigger, and it's big enough.

Sure, it'd be great if every browser on every system had every font and drew them at the exact same size. In the real world, things don't work like that, and if I used text, it would more than likely break/look ugly in a lot of cases. Plus, I'd need to use some sort of crazy div setup to get the text in the right place.

It was good enough for Nintendo's quality control in one of the best games ever (Yoshi's Island, if you can't tell), and I don't see any problems myself.

Yeah, it would be nice if things worked like that. I have a slow connection, so nobody should be allowed to use big images. Too bad the world isn't like that, and just because your computer sucks doesn't mean people are going to strip everything down to meet its specifications.

You got me wrong.

The size of a screenshot of the layout is very different from the actual size. For example the woodsides, since those are able to stretch they should be repeating, lets say that wood is like 10px wide, since it only changes shape after like 5px we make it 5px high and just make that repeat. That image will be like under a 1kb. But together in a screenshot it will be alot more since the format has to use alot more colors because of ... more colors in the screenshot.

Take for example the cloud background, that will also repeat, it is now even. Even if it repeats 500 times it will still be the same size (kb wise).

Get me now?
