What kind of a video card do you need to play the ZSNES at 16-Bit graphics at full speed. I can only get it to run fast on my old P1 if I kick it down to 8-Bit. I'm thinking of jamming another video card in it! ^^

If you're running it in Windows...just have 16-bit set...but on a regular Pentium...I doubt you're going that route. With DOS, you must have VESA 2.0 minimum running in your system or else 16-bit will not work. (For the majority, you MAY be able to get one mode of 16-bit running with VESA 1.2, I remember towards the end of my old comp experience I could run 16-bit in a mode but it ran uber-slow) I remember a while back that I had SciTech Display Doctor...or something around those lines...it was some 30-day trial deal that allowed you to have 16-bit support in DOS and was VESA 3.0 I believe. If you get that, you should be able to run it no matter what...but it'll only be active for 30 days...so you'll either have to buy it or crack it. But, I must say, if you're trying to run 16-bit DOS color in ZSNES on a Pentium...you're asking for a world of shit. (edited by Hiryuu on 09-28-04 10:12 PM) |

I wouldn't be surprised if I had it at 16 on my Celery. In any event I didn't notice much of a difference. But I'm sure you can live with 8, right? |

If he's presented with a game that requires a lot of 16-bit transparencies...it kinda takes the fun out of the game if you're only using 8-bit. You always have to disable like...layer 3 I believe...in order to see it. Don't believe me...get a little ways into FF4 and get into the mist cave. If you don't have 16-bit or that layer disabled in 8-bit...you can't see shit. |

I ran ZSNES DOS in 640 x 480 with interpolation only and maximum auto frameskip on an old PI several year ago ... with some crappy 4 MB onboard video card ... for games with less CPU usage it was okay; but I think VESA 2.0 was okay. But my monitor had problems until it gave up some day and I needed to get a new one In Mario RPG it was almost about 5 frames per second ... and now don't ask how, but I made it to Smithy later on. That part with fast moving turn block platforms was like a hell to me, since everything just was visible for short moments only An inconvenient way is to disable certain background layers or new GFX engine, as long you don't have another GFX card to hand. You could also try an older version of SNES9x if you can live with a smaller screen. As for graphical compatibility, before I had less problems with some games like Tactics Ogre. As long you ensure you're putting your desktop to 16 colors it might be better - despite the lower compatibility of games (unlike the GFX). |

Yea I remember playing Mario RPG on my Pentium 166 and not getting any better than slow Frameskip 9 at times, hitting a grand total of 2 or 3 FPS. Tetris Attack was even worse at times. But the ones that don't suck the hell out of your CPU, that run at a decent rate (back then I could tolerate 3/4 Frameskip most times...), are pretty much worth the time and effort. I mean heck...it was enough for me to beat the FFs (minus Mystic Quest) and Chrono Trigger...I'm pretty sure it can do a lot more than that too. |

A lot of stuff works when I put it to 8-bit, but not everything. Super Mario RPG is kinda choppy. My Genesis emulator is working great, though. Maybe I should concentrate more on that... >.> I should see if I can get a 4 or 8 meg video card. I wanna play my ZSNES!!! Anyways: Anyone know where I can find a 4 or 8 meg video card? Is there any online store or anything?

*shrug* I played FF4 on my Celeron (2 MB video card!) and had no problems so I guess I had 16-bit. At least the POS was good for something in the end. |

I used a 486 for ZSNES emulation. One-two FPS per minute... very intresting to play at least. Funny how the music slowed down whenever it loaded a stage. I never could get it to play in pure DOS (It needed something)... And oh, the only game I tested was SMW. It probably would kill it if I ran games like Starfox. |

Oh hell...I tried running the 1.00 for Windows on Windows on my 133 back in the day...I thought it'd keel over of a heart attack.

...It's not THAT much faster than a P1. That's why I put it in there. I could also get double speed speeding up so... *I* ran ZSNES on my 486/25. Lufia 2 at 2 FPS... fun. |
