Saturday night, I installed Windows Service Pack 2. Now my computer won't start up, and I'm stuck on my mom's crappy Mac (don't get me wrong, Macs are great, but I can make this thing spaz just by typing at my normal speed). It gets to the screen with the Windows logo that says it's starting up with the little green bar, but goes black after that, and after a while goes to the screen my computer always shows the second it's turned on (an advertisement for the company that made the moniter), and it starts over again.

Windows XP Home
All updates installed
If other information is needed, ask

I'd normally go use a Windows System Restore point to fix much of anything, but I can't very well do that without getting the computer to actually run.

So, two questions:
1) How do I force the computer to boot in safe mode?
2) What else can I do to fix it?

Press F8 like crazy when the computer start. Before the "Windows is loading screen" but after the BIOS, they don't give you very long time to press F8 but just press it repeatly like I do and it should appear. And then select safe mode, and then it starts in safe mode. In there you try to make a system restore like you would do otherwise.

Otherwise you could try to pop in the Windows XP install CD and choose repair... but that's the last thing you would like to do.

If winxp fails to start properly it should give you a (dos?) screen with a few options such as start in safe mode or to go with the last proper startup files.
It can also be a memory that's faulty, or something wrong with your graphics card when trying to display the actual desktop. Try replacing or if you have several memory banks, remove one and try, if it doesn't work, remove another and try again.

Do you use an AMD Athlon64 processor ?
If yes, the following should help, since SP2 might mess up the installation of Windows XP then:

When starting up, hold F8 until you got the Windows selection screen, take "Safe mode with prompt(ing)" - I'm not sure how the correct translation is; I talk about the third option from the top.

Next, login with your adminstrator account. then go Start -> Run -> regedit and navigate through the registry via

HKEY_LOCAL MACHINE -> SYSTEM -> CurrentControlSet -> Services -> Intelppm -> Start-Entry in the right window, change the value to 4.

Close the editor and restart your machine normally.

This is a really stupid setting in WinXP. By default, it's set to reboot whenever it hits a BSOD, which means when something like this happens your computer just reboots endlessly and you can't tell what's wrong. One way to get into Safe Mode is to shut the computer off while Windoze is starting; it's not good for it but it'll do. You might also want to try booting off the XP CD, going to the Recovery Console, and running ChkNTFS. This should fix any filesystem errors, which will cause this problem. (They're usually the result of being shut off while the HD is being written to, or a bad disk.)

I have a Pentium 4, so the Athlon stuff won't apply. As for the manual memory removal; I'd prefer not to have to do that, at least not for a while.

Alright, so I can try to run safe mode now, but that doesn't help too much: it crashes at the same point.

My computer has already done an automatic file integrity check (I'm running FAT32), so I don't think that's the problem.

I don't know where my XP CD is. Is there anything to stop me from borrowing one from a friend?

Is there any way to disable the automatic restart with BSODs?
(And I can understand why they did that: The automatic restart looks like a brown-out just hit (when it doesn't happen in endless loop), so Microsoft can claim to have removed the BSOD and make themselves look good)

Any XP (or even 2K) CD should work for system recovery, but if you reinstall you'll need that CD's key.

If you have a fully bought system, like a Dell or some shit like that and still have warranty, give it in. If you don't, then just open the box, pick up some memory slots, it's not hard at all and I can almost guarantee you, if you screw up, you're the most unlucky bastard in the world. Just make sure you don't lick an electrical output at the same time and you should be fine.
