Why is it that there are, I'll say, 5000 threads in this forum that haven't been replied to in over a month, all of which are open now, but the instant someone replies to one of those 5000 threads, it gets closed? If the higher powers here must be so picky, why even wait for one of those replies? Why not program the board to close 'em up automatically after a couple weeks of inactivity? Or just wipe 'em off the board altogether; they're just taking up space! Makes no sense at all. If people are still contributing to topics despite the topics not being created so recently, you'd think they oughta be worth keeping open, but I digress...

Um, there IS already an auto-close feature after X amount of time.

If an old topic is bumped for a good reason, it stays open. I just did that for a topic in this forum.

I would also hardly consider that digressing.

Like Leg said, there is a feature that automatically closes threads. The time tha it takes is a few months, though, so that topics in inactive forums can be replied to more.

No, that's wrong. There isn't and has never been such a feature. It was just blades that did a mysql query once, ONCE, ages ago, that closed all threads older than 50days I think. If you go back to the start of a forum you'll see that no threads (besides regular closing) has been closed.

Odd, I kept hearing it was a feature. Well, there's a suggestion for 2.0 now.

Since the first time it was done it has gone around in circles alot. Alot of staff members thought it was a feature too. But, alas, it is not the case. And yes, I think it has been suggested in whatever version is next, alot of times.

Lol. tecnically it was because my first point was how it makes less sense to go bump--->close instead of close before bump, and then I'm like "why even close after the bump".

But this especially applies to the boards that have not as much activity as others do. A lot of topics that have been stagnant for over a month are still on page 1. You can either keep the old one going, or start a new one and have the same discussion twice on the same page. I mean, if there's already little activity we shouldn't be going out of our way to kill off whatever activity is left.

Anyway, this isn't really a huge deal, I just have a tendency to complain about things that don't make sense.

Let's put it this way...if you have a GOOD reason to bump something that is excessively old (3 weeks or more would be my standard at least) then it'll probably stay alive. But if you bump some cruddy thread, or post something that doesn't add anything whatsoever...or some one-lined crap...it'll get closed.

This was talked about in another thread. My suggestion that I posted to that thread is repeated here, so that someone who has write access to the current AcmlmBoard code might see it and consider it.

I think that closing threads after they have been bumped is action taken too late. Closing bumped threads may even be a hindrance to the overall enjoyment of the site, as many users may want to post a meaningful reply.

I think an automatic thread closure system may be a good way to prevent bumping in the first place. The thread table could have a column added that stores a time that the thread would be automatically closed. When some action is taken on the thread, such as posting, editing, or moderation, the autoclose time is set to at least the current time plus some amount that could be adjusted on a site or forum basis. When the thread is viewed by a logged on user, a similar update could be performed, but with a sooner point in the future. Before any script reveals the closure state of the thread, a check could be performed on the autoclose time to see if it has expired and close the thread it if necessary.

I think the possibility of distinguishing between automatic and moderated closures should be considered as well.

I think if we all made posting decisions with our friend, Mr. Common Sense, none of this would be an issue.

it's a suggestion that will never be implemented without a configuration option....

in lesser posted in forums, it makes perfectly good sense to maybe reply to a thread 4 or 5 months later, as long as it's an on topic post that contributes to the thread....

and even in an Active forum...

if you went on page 5.... and posted something MEANINGFULL it would likely remain open....
