Yeah, earlier last week i went to turn on my XP computer, and after the stupid HP loading screen went away, it takes me to a black screen saying. Windows could not start because system32/hal.dll is mssing or corrupt

Thats it it then tells me to re install a copy of it. I tried doing the built sys recovery but it gives me 9999999 errors and wont work .

Any one know anything that could help? I really need it .

The only things i can do before the screen comes up its press ESC for boot menu then F1 for setup. if that helps any.

It's simply because you added partitions before the partition, or you changed the partition ID. Make sure that it is the first primary partition (the actual order) and it's ID 1. That's the default on most PCs.

If that doesn't help.... use a NT floppy disk boot loader to manually boot the partition. (They are all over the Web, Google)

The fact that you tried the recovery may have impaired your ability to boot, though.

No i never did any partioning, i think it was this bloodhound virus i had. My norton kept giving me errors abotu it, but norton never did anything about that. so i left the comp on over night, and was gonna get rid of it in the morning, but i came down to that. so i believe it was deleted.

I tried the disk boot idea. i got the 6 boot floppys for it, but i relazied i dont have a floppy drive .

I called HPabout it, they bascially mocked me saying the first thing i shoulda done was make the sys recovery disc things. So there sending me a copy of them.

So everything is ok now.

Thanks for your help DOS.

Actually... I meant a single floppy disk with the NT boot loader that would boot any Windows NT/2000/XP set up from any drive or partition. Not the six disk set for setting up Windows 2000/XP

You don't have a floppy drive?
If you have/can find an XP install CD, you could just run it and go to Recover (not Recovery Console). That basically just copies all the system files from the CD, similar to reinstalling but without removing your files.
