I figure I might get one if I can find a plan (available in Ontario of course ) that suits my very low-budget needs. Basically I'm looking for something that you just buy some number of minutes, and that's about it. No (or very little) monthly/annual service charges. Also, I'd rather not have one of those crazy newfangled phones that tells the weather, checks your email, and makes toast. Just a portable phone. (Well, maybe with text messaging and ring tones, if possible. ) Does anyone know of a plan somewhat like this? I thought it'd be pretty cool to have one but I can't exactly keep up a monthly charge with an income of whatever I mooch off my mom. (I might be getting a job soon, but I still wouldn't want to be blowing a lot of cash on that.) |

(tries to throw a shoe without hitting someone hawking prepaid wireless) Nope, can't do it. At least down here. Although the basic phones WILL have most of those features. Just don't get a Siemens SL56. Sucks the shit out of a llama's GI tract. I'm just gonna upgrade to something that might get reception in my house. |

Bah, cell phones. Worthless little devil-machines, the lot of 'em! Always with the BLAH BLAH BLAH, it's like the whole frickin' WORLD has a little plastic box permanently glued to its collective ear! It's like the pager fad all over again, but...NOT GOING AWAY (obviously not a huge fan of cell phones) |

Most companies offer plans like you're looking for, HH. But you need to make certain you're not paying the extra fees and what not. If you're thinking of getting the kind of wireless service where you buy a phone and purchase minutes only when you need them, I suppose that would work. Otherwise you'll be paying at least $35/mo. (almost guaranteed to be more) for a set number of minutes per month. On the other hand, those "pay as you go" wireless serivces tend to suck, from what I've heard. As a hint, my friend told me that if you don't get one of those nationwide plans you can usually pay like $5 extra per month to get no roaming fees ever. Which would come in handy for me during the summer since I move out to the woods of michigan. Don't know if you're ex urbis much, though. |

I have a cellphone, a Siemiens. It's old today but you can *gasp* call with it! And I never call with it, or seldom have it turned on in the first place. Get a old phone, at least three years old. Replace the batteries if you have too. |

I have a cellphone that can actually last for a week without recharging. So handy when my mother decides to call me, as my previous cellphone could only handle ~30 mins of active use. I supose you don't have a reload card system there? (you're under an operator and buy a card with a code and fixed ammount, you call the number and insert the code and voil |

Most of very young cell phone users are getting them from their parents ("Mom, can I have one, pleeeeeease. The other ones also have one! ") and then I'm experiencing calls like this when I'm heading home from work in the bus: "I'll be there in ten minutes!" "Please bring me some potatoes and a bottle of milk" etc. Or people having the big new models just flipping out of their bag when being in a crowd, just for showing "My As for me, I also have one, but I'm using it rarely and it is quite handy in some cases. I don't like affect too much attention, so inside a bus I'm having it in silent ring mode and not shouting when someone is calling As for recommendations, I cannot help too much. I have a 3200, but I got a used one (my 3310 broke after four successful years), but you can take nearly any phone today. The included camera is a toy, but as for mostly messaging and telephoning any cell would fit for me Via IrDA or a data cable you can load your favourite MIDIs into the phone, so when you can take your most favourite (game) tracks with you. The Nokia 6230 even has an included MP3player with a lot of space - but since you don't need these extras, get the phone which fits within your price range and appearance |

i have some 6*** Nokia one. It doesn't do much, but it looks cooler than most phones, and isn't a bulky thing either. I don't use it much either, it's more of an emergency thing. | |||

After reading people's fierce responses to this thread I'm scared of posting.... please don't hurt me I'm a Cell/Mobile phone NUT. AT the moment I own 2, as for why I need 2, well the bettery on my newest phone's not too good, so it's not that great as an alarm clock, plus I can play games for longer. In direct answer to your question Hyper, it seems that your best option would be to go for a "Pay as you go" deal. They're VERY common place over here, but I obviously don't know about your neck of the woods As for a specific handset, well ALL Handsets offer at leats Monophonic ringtones and SMS. If you were in the UK you could get something pretty basic, like a Nokia 3310 for about |

I don't get the hating on the cell-phones. They are good for their uses, and, well, I think it is nice to be available. However, all the trash around the cell-phones, that's what I dislike! All else who hate Jamba, raise your hands! (edited by The SomerZ on 09-20-04 12:37 PM) |
