yup...it is all about money--players want more money and the owners do not want to pay bigger contracts.

us fans know that if there is some sort of cap (i.e. ceiling) , then things would be resolved.

i like the way this one sports columnist put it:
The union will not want this "ceiling" to be called a salary cap. That's fine. Don't call it a salary cap. And the owners will not want this "ceiling" to be called a luxury tax. That's fine, too. Don't call it a luxury tax. Invent a new term. Call it a "Top Shelf." Or seek out a corporate sponsor and call it a "Bud Light Screw Top."

Lol! That is funny.
Oh time to put my two cents in.
Okay I think that the players are allready getting paid an absolutely outrageaous amount for a season. If I was in charge, which I am not, I would actually lower the amount that they were getting paid. It is just to outrageous the amount that athletes get paid...Am I the only one who thinks that?

No, you are not the only one who thinks that. I do think that the athletes get paid too much. I have a feeling that some people who get paid for how smart they are
get paid less then the athletes. Strength or intelligence...Hmmm...

The problem is... well, Jeremy Roenick put it best. When the league makes an offer to the PA, they say it's bull. When the PA makes an offer to the league, they say it's bull.

I'm a very unhappy person right now.

How to "fix" the NHL:

1. FIRE GARY BETTMAN! If someone would *please* start a petition requesting this fine proposal, I would dearly sign it. Don't forget-this guy was in charge of running the NBA when it was in trouble.
2. No more expansion, contracting or relocating teams.
3. No more fudging around with the rules. Just stick with the ones that exist already.
4. Have player salaries be capped, not team salaries. You shouldn't be making any more than $5 mil a season, which even that's a little high. Rookies shouldn't get paid more than $1 mil with $300K in bonuses no matter how good they are.

This is quite a sad day for hockey... even more sad considering this would've been one of the finest seasons of NHL hockey ever, all the lesser teams building to become contenders (Florida, Ottawa, Los Angeles, etc) that is, if there was still gonna be one, but unfortunately, there isn't.

1) Bettman's not the problem. He did a great job with the NBA when he was the commish there (basically turning the league around) and he's done a good job in the NHL overall.
2) Expansion's not going to happen anytime soon. Contraction hasn't happened in the NHL in years but if the lockout stretches out we might see teams folding. Relocation's always a possibility and is preferable to expansion if a market's dried out.
3) Then we end up with low scoring games and no evolution in gameplay. The rules aren't the main issue in the CBA talks anyways.
4) The rookie thing's going to be in the new CBA no matter what, but I agree on capping PLAYER salaries - the proposed $39m salary cap is absurd.

The owners should have taken a stand a long time ago to stop the rising salaries. And I'm talking about all the major sports here. But especially hockey, since they don't make as much revenue to begin with. Cause the players aren't gonna just take pay cuts at this point.

What's bothering me the most is the rookies coming into the league thinking they can dictate how much money they're worth without even playing a single minute, and getting away with it! For every rookie that's held out for that reason, I say "Pay your dues, bitch". I think this problem is the one that can be most easily fixed, too. There's no rookies representing the players' union. Cut their salaries and make 'em earn their paper. What are they gonna do about it?

And I think the league that has the greatest amount of overpaid players is the NBA and that they'll be in a stoppage whenever their

The NBA did have a strike a few years ago that wiped out roughly half the season.

Sad thing is, the players/league learned NOTHING from it.
