...what? LAN stands for local area network...like when a bunch of friends get together and play. You probably want to use battle.net as your point of gaming online. |

LAN is when you have 2 or several computers connected to each other. The computers connected are using the same internet service and can view certain files on different computers. So if you want to play WC3 with LAN, you need another computer in the same building. And you dont need to be on the internet for a LAN game, nor a different CD.

On WC3, you need the CD to play I believe, therefore you'd need a different CD. LAN is just what the others said and you could play on it with copied versions, but not on the internet - at least that's how all games used to be (no internet connection -> no checking the CD key) |

no, CD-Keys are still checked in LAN...when the game connects to the server, you can't use the same CD-Key as someone else there. Think about it...if only one person in the world could use a CD-Key, then how can Battle.NET stop people who are playing on their own private servers? So yeah, you can used the copied version to play on a LAN if you wish, you just have to make sure all the people are using unique CD-Keys when they are on the network. |

There are exceptions to games though. I've played starcraft with 5 others with only one CD key. Starcraft is old though, I could imagine most recent games demanding a unique CD key.

Some LAN cables(Ethernet). If your computer is old then you might need to buy an Ethernet Adaptor, wich isnt really expensive. And you will most likely need a router.

My router was 100$, and to network the computers we needed 50 feet of cable, wich was about 45$. ANd finally the ethernet adaptor wich came around 10$. The whole setup was pretty expensive, and I dont really suggest it if you only want to play games. $ = canadian |

I got a net cable (100') for $1.95 + ship (~8) off eBay... edit: without that decimal it looks expensive (edited by Yiffy Kitten on 03-20-04 01:45 PM) (edited by Yiffy Kitten on 03-20-04 01:47 PM) |

what is the difference between a router and a hub? I would think a hub would suffice for a LAN that doesn't need internet access?

Either one should do fine. And I think it's possible to get a crack that'll let you play local LAN games with a copied version, but you won't be able to use it online.

You can use a hub only but then I believe you need a computer set up as a DHCP server.

Originally posted by Yiffy Kitten Nah, you just need to manually give them different IPs (like 192.168.0.1, 192.168.0.2, etc...), and give them the same subnet info and you're ready to go. So, if you have more than one comp that can play it, or friends willing to bring their comp, all you need is a hub (fairly cheap), one ethernet cable per computer, and each computer needs its ethernet card. You can even find kits with pretty much all of that included. |

You COULD have a PC w/2 NICs in it serving as a router/DHCP server, I have my parent's machine at home set to do that - line in from cable -> their PC -> switch -> my 2 PCs

Doing DHCP on a home network is a really bad idea. DHCP serves no real practical application with less then 10 client machines and, in addition, it would make it far easier for someone to break in (a wardriver for example). People should not be lazy and just do manual config. My linksys router has DHCP -OFF- Don't get a router unless you plan to network all your machines to share an internet connection. For just home network gaming, a switch should be all you need. |

okay wow... I didn't reply to this thread earlier cause of the sheer idiocy displayed in like the first 2 posts... but now it has reached such an indeterminate level I feel I must inject some "smart" into the thread 1) any Broadband router you buy will have a built in DHCP Server 2) Routers cost about 40 dollars... not 9872349872347 like you tards keep saying 3) Most Switches cost as much if not more than a cheap 4 port router 4) so buy a router anyway 5) then you can share your broadband internet connection 6) you only need "LAN" to play other people .. on .. just that LAN... 7) to play on battle.net you just connect to battle.net it's simple |
