A post in rom-hacking made me decide to post this. What is the deal with Waluigi's name? Wario is Mario with the M flipped. Shouldn't Luigi's polar opposite be with the L flipped? now sure, an upside down L isn't a letter. It's part of an F or something....yeah. So, what does everyone here think his name should have been?

I think they were going to make it Waruigi, l upside down being a lower case r, but there's that l r sound the same in japan problem, so they changed it, or it was changed in transration. Edit: And also, Wario's name is also a play off the japanese word for Evil or something like that. (edited by Someguy on 09-11-04 04:50 PM) |

I think his name should have been Ruigi, or something like that.

I think Wai did mean evil or something in Japanse. So it makes more sense now? Edit: And oh, the Japanse word I looked for is warui. Which is evil, or bad. (edited by Ailura on 09-11-04 07:10 PM) |

Ailura has it. 'warui' + 'mario' = 'wario' = evil Mario 'warui' + 'luigi' (keep in mind that 'lu' and 'ru' are the same sound in Japanese) = 'waluigi' = Evil Luigi. |

yeah, i pretty much deny waluigi as part of the mario cast. But then again, any character who was not 8 or 16 bits in the ancient past is not part of MY mario cast of characters.

Mileena, don't worry; 'wai! wai!' is an expression (usually said by little kids) of happiness and excitement, like 'yippee!' or 'hooray!'

Yep, Warui is the Japanese word meaning evil, and 'R' and 'L' are pronounced the same in Japan. So that's where Waluigi came from. Quite a stroke of genius |
