I was wondering if anyone knew what makes a mouse and keyboard suddenly go all haywire, and not be able to type anything, all windows close as soon as they are opened, and a bunch of other weird things, and then, if i disconnect the mouse and keyboard, after a little while, anywhere between 1 hour, and about 6......if I dont reply, that means its happened again...and i cant type.

A slew of viruses, more than likely. If it's completely spontaneous window-closing (not generated by your mouse or some other keyboard command) then I would assume that path. If you haven't done a scan locally or can't, I'd pull through TrendMicro's HouseCall and see if you can't do that without it closing. |

I'd have to agree, self-closing windows and keyboard/mouse spasms are two completely different problems, which usually means a virus.

I tried Norton Anti-virus scan, but nothing, but now I will also try housecall....norton didnt find anything.and it seems like the mouse and keyboard spasm, then stop, then repeat...and the weird thing is, I can still move the mouse, but when clicking on something, or right clicking, the menu closes right away....and I have to hold alt if I want to click on a link somewhere on the internet, ive tried about 3 different mice, and 2 keyboards.....house call keeps making IE close, so im running Panda activescan, and its already found something....we will see how this turns out. edit: Done the panda scan, and got rid of some viruses, so it seems to be working and hasnt messed up since the scan started...so im thinking it was a virus.....thanks for the help. Well it's good you found it and fixed the problem. If Norton didn't find anything though, that's a bad sign. You might want to get your virus definitions (if that's how Norton works, I don't know; I use McAfee) updated. Additionally, if you don't have a software firewall (ZoneAlarm's an idea) and you don't have your Windows updated on the Windows Update site, you might want to do that to ensure you don't have more problems in the future. |

it was not a virus.....I did the virus scan, got rid of all viruses, and then it worked for a few hours, and its screwing up again...I also did a virus scan again, no virus......anyone know the answer? I think i might upgrade to SP2 to see it that helps the problem......since windows update keeps telling me to install it anyway. (edited by Dcahrakos on 09-14-04 07:46 PM) |

Service Pack 2 is known to cause massive ammounts of problems. And just because Norton doesn't pick up in something doesn't mean it's not a huge problem. |

1. I didnt use norton, I used the panda activescan, since it wouldnt let me use housecall...and that didnt detect anything. 2. its like this, whatever it is, has a mind of its own, it just worked for 4 days straight, but now it messes up all the time again, its like its mocking me lol... so its still not fixed, and no one has a clue why its happening, here is whats not the problem so far: Virus - scanned 4 times.....nothing spyware - scanned also, nothing usb port, and ps/2 port, tried other mice, and keyboards someone suggested it could be a problem with the wires in the computer, that connect the ports...but I doubt that, cause it works once and awhile, but not other times.... so I have 2 choices, 1. reformat, even without the drivers i need....I might be able to find them afterwards, if I reformat, I will be forced to use win 98SE, but i have to drivers for my cable modem, or video card, or anything, cause I couldnt find any that were compatible with 98SE(if someone can help me with this, I can reformat, unless XP drivers will work with 98SE(will they?)) 2.wait til christmas, when I can afford to get a new computer, and until then, keep trying to fix this one. What kind of mice have you been using? If they're all PS/2, try USB, or vice-versa. The port could be dirty or messed up. Something else you could try is looking for a DOS program that uses the mouse, and running it outside of windoze (use a boot disk or something). If it still acts up, you'll know it's a hardware problem.

I deleted my other post, so I could bump the thread, but I believe I have found the problem...and I think it was spyware, cause yesterday, I downloaded spyware doctor(which I recommend for anyone) and it picked up about 30 that adaware and spybot didnt, and after I scanned, I rebooted, and my mouse still works now, and before it use to mess up everytime I restarted the pc....so it just might be fixed.... |
