Okay, so I went to the Gamestop at the mall last week or so, and looking around, I find some cheap gamepad, with six buttons on the front, along with L and R buttons. I look at it, and immediately want it. (Perfect for SNES, NES etc etc)

After all, it was only 10 bucks..

Anyways, I didn't have any money at the time, so I ask my mom if I can pay her back later, she accepts, and we go to the cash registar.

He sits there, and asks "Hey, what sort of games are you gonna use THIS for?" then looks at me. My mind races across roms and such, and I start feeling sort of nervous, "Uh, I don't know, anything?" I reply, trying to act natural.

He keeps on insisting, but finally we pay and get the hell out of there.

Are stores trying to make people admit to having rom and such, or what? I felt sort of nervous, but maybe it was just my mind making connections....

Wouldn't worry about it. Gamestop probably has an idea of what you're using it for. Although, in the legal sense, you're supposed to be using it for the computer games in general, obviously they have an idea it can be used for more than that.

If you're that paranoid about it, just say computer games, duh. It'd be telling the truth. Personally, it's not like I'd be that intimidated about it anyways, considering that everyone and their brother has emulated something at some point, at least on here.

*cuddles his Gravis Eliminator GamePad Pro*

Seriously, it's the only one I've purchased that's held up so long. Pretty much has a PSX layout so it's good for both SNES and PSX games.

And I'd say computer games. And if they asked, I would just fire off an EA Sports game off the top of my head - can't argue with that.

Just like whenever you buy electronic parts, they always ask what it's for. "Well you see, I'm bulding a bom-er, science project."

Yeah, but I couldn't really think of a game that used it..

It was weird though, he kept asking again and again.

Finally he gave up.

So just look around the store for a split second and pick a game.

Or you say the old "Oh, it's my friend's birthday and I figured he'd like this" line.

I went into gamestop and got a controller. They asked me what it was for. I said ZSNES. He said, "Good program, ever play Terranigma." I hadn't heard of it since it wasn't released in the US. Awesome game.

Gamestop people won't do shit to you. It's not like if you say "Playing ROMs" they'll call security and get you arrested. They don't care. =(

I guess they COULD refuse to sell it to you but they wouldn't. They're not going to throw away a sale, it's common business sense.

I don't think they care so much after all thought, hell they wouldn't care if you bought it for new pirated games.

And some of the ROM images of old games could be considered abondenware, which means that the companies get's no profit from it any longer. So why would they refuse selling a controller to someone who buy a controller for emulating a system which they don't even probably sell?

Exactly. Back to the original question, the store is the one that's selling the gamepads. They expect people to buy them. The employee was being inappropriately curious/friendly.

That salesman must have no life if his personal goal is to trap a customer in their "web of lies". He shouldn't give two shits what you're using it for because this guy cannot make anything above ten bucks an hour, and that would still be a generous income for video game retail. Of course your town may vary. He should just be satisfied that he had a paying customer in front of him.

I haven't brushed up on legalities lately, but if you own the cart, then it's okay to own the rom, right? If so, you can at least say you own the cart. After that, flip him off and make lewd comments about the sexual behavior of his mother.

The ONLY way I could see that justified was if the manager told him to question certain people like that.

And even then you'd have to wonder how that particular store was managed in general if crap like that's going on.

Ok, I thought this was obvious, but no one has said it, so....

The guy was a fellow gamer, he emulates, it's very common. Heck, he probably "borrows" the stores games and copies them. Duh. He just wondered if you understood the power of what you were buying. He may have been a little over-friendly, yes, but he was not trying to catch you for copyright infringement. If I were in his position, I'd have done the same thing.

That doesn't really sound like paranoia. That sounds like the dude was fucking with you b/c he knew what you were puchasing it for. That would creep the hell out of me too, though I would not be afraid of getting caught for Roms of all things, omg.

What about a ten-year-old boy along with five other children, holding the newest CD of his favourite band and asking a vendor "I need 50 CD-Rs. On which floor can I find them?" ?

As already stated, it is not the vendor's concern what you are doing with that pad.
As for me, I have a Speed Link USB force feedback pad with eight buttons, though ZSNES doesn't support the rumble feature , but I'm very satisfied with it.

Rather pay a little more for a good pad than to buy dozens of cheaper ones, like I did many years ago

Back when Zophar had a store, I purchased a PSX/N64 controller adaptor. It does not support rumble, but it otherwise rules. I use it for all of my emulation needs.. with a PS2 controller.

I also have an adaptor that allows me to use the same controller with my Gamecube. I always get a kick out of playing a gameboy advance game on my Gamecube with a PS2 controller on my computer monitor. Probably not the gaming environment originally envisioned by the big N.
