| I just recently purchased a new computer as my old one was fairly out of date, but have two questions which I was hoping I could get help with here. 1. I didn't bother buying a new modem (long story), as I already had a useable one from the old computer. It's a Netcomm Roadster 56 Ultra. When detecting it, Windows XP said that the drivers that came with it were not digitally signed for safe compatability, and to go online and get ones that were (I sortof expected this as the modem is 5 years old) (Obviously this was a pain and meant hooking up the old computer again to get access to the internet). Anyway, I found the new driver (3.1) at the Netcomm website and it said it was for XP. However, WXP still gave the message that it was not digitally signed and could cause problems. I used it anyway, as it was from the Netcomm site, and it seems to be working OK. My question is: Is this going to cause problems later on? Should I email Netcomm Support and ask why it wasn't signed? 2. I've got a couple of old DOS versions of Lucas Arts games - Sam n Max, Day of the Tentacle etc - which I still consider absolute gems. The new sound card, which is a SB Audigy 2 ZS, doesn't configure properly in the set up and the games don't run sound, or worse crash. The Lucas Arts sites says they are not planned to support or patch these old games. Does this mean my old copies are toast? That would be a huge shame. Is it a DOS/WXP problem or a soundcard problem? | 1. Just because they wrote one for XP doesn't mean they get the digitally signed and safe for compatibility approval because the people who approve this are the people at microsoft. So yeah, if no issues arise, then everything is okay. 2. XP was been written in a way that may cause old DOS and Win9x programs not to be able to run in XP or not correctly (but still runnable). Sound issues might be due to how the DOS programs are looking for sound. in the old days, an old configuration file was executed before windows started. In WinXP, this file is no longer executed and as a result is why your programs might not give sound. You could try setting compatibility mode on the .exe files (right click and select properties). If that doesn't work, then either install Win9x or below OR try DOSBox or Bochs (x86 emulators) |

All that means is they haven't paid M$ the extra cash to have that message removed. I've seen manuals that actually said to ignore that.  |

| Thanks for your help guys, just a little update: 1. The modem worked fine until the computer is shutdown and turned back on, following which it does not detect the modem even though switched on. When attempting internet connection it says there is no installed modem, runs hardware wizard and (eventually) finds the modem. If using the Netcomm driver it still gives a warning but will run fine, up until I reboot again, where it follows the same cycle. Eventually I just chose to use a WinXP driver for a generic 56 modem, which I wished it had asked me to do in the first place, and it's running fine now. Any Ideas what the hell happened? 2. Compatability mode didn't work, but thanks anyway. I'll try DOSBox. Ta, Tris |

Sounds to me like Windoze isn't remembering what driver you chose, which is really weird.  |
