Some of you folks that have been here a while may remember me posting screenshots of this long ago. This thing has been on my hard drive for over two years, and I figured its time to publicly release it. http://bitmaster.panicus.org/projects/mm3lifebarhack/ Basically, this just gives all of the enemies in the game their own lifebar. The extra code probably slows the game down a tad, but not by much hopefully. The original one I made back then actually worked by expanding the rom and putting the routine in the free bank. This is why I could not just make an ips of it and release it. An ips of an expanded rom would contain most of the original rom data. Fast forward until just the other day, I got a friend to play through megaman 3 using FCEUXD's code/data logger. Using this log, I found that about 30% of the rom seems to be completely unused free space. But up until FCEUXD, I had no way of knowing this, or knowing for sure where any free space was at. Now, I couldn |

Saving the better stuff for later heh bbit Nice one though. It's gonna be on everyone's "template" roms for mm3 hacking. |

*Runs back, WHEW!* hey Bbitmaster this is really nice, I like it alot. This is a cool hack you did. It feels like the game already came with that feature.

Already played it, I think. I do know I had an old mmven rom, when you were using megaman 3, that had double jumping and multidirectional shooting. I would still love to see a life extention tank added, and possibly a couple other things. Then again, for stuff like that, there is always megaman x. |

Actually Jigglysaint, Sephiroth3 made that mmven rom you had after I did this. Infact, I believe Megaman Vengeance spawned from this little hack and the screenshots of it which I posted back then. When Vagla and Sephiroth3 saw this it inspired Sephiroth3 to code Megaman 3 Vengeance, and then Megaman Vengeance after the former was canned. One of these days, I'm going to make a megaman 3 editor or hack or something that includes an option for Heart Tanks. Because, it would be extremely easy to do with my knowledge of mm3's lifebar subroutines. (I never said this, but for anyone with a beta of mmven you'll notice all the enemies have lifebars. But I never said that, so don't go try to get a leaked beta if you don't have it.) (edited by bbitmaster on 08-30-04 04:58 PM) |

You know, I doubt this is possible, but if there was a way to re-do the life bar so it doesn't use as many sprites. Maybe a fraction or somthing. If you had one sprite that just constantly refreshes, wouldn't it save room? The other suggestion is to make the rush items pickups like the balloon and wire in mm4. |

I saw the screenshots, and it looked pretty tight. However, there is one qualm I have about the hack. You kept the levels the same. Sure, enemy lifebars are pretty cool, but the thing that makes a hack elite isn't the super-fancy tricks alone. You should use a combination of good level design, pretty graphics and fancy tricks. If you were to make a complete hack of all the levels using the lifebar feature, this hack would stand alone as the #1 best of all time. That's my opinion. --Schwa |

(I'm posting from school for the first time, hope it works...) This is not supposed to be a level or graphics hack. If it were, I would have changed that stuff. This hack was released for its own purpose of showing off what a little ASM programming can do. Not to mention anyone is free to use this in their own hack. I guess the times have changed though since 2002, now asm hacks are considered something that anyone can do. So, in the future I'll remember not to release anything like this unless I have something else to go with it. If I don't have that, then I guess it'll just sit on my hard drive... forever. No, I think the hack is fine as is. Remember back in the day when Final Fantasy 6 hacks were released left and right, and the only changes were new really tough enemies? People still played and loved them. They weren't full blown hacks, but one really well done change for people to check out and play with. I'd rather release a hack with few really well done changes instead of a hack with a million mediocre or ho-hum changes. I enjoyed the change, and it would sadden many if such gems sat unused on hard drives, instead of floating out and about and being enjoyed. |

I gotta agree with chickenlump on this one. Hacks like this really makes the hack feel different no matter how small the change. I replaced it with the original MM3. This is a classic hack all by itself.

a hack can be released and still appreciated on technical merit alone. bbit wasn't trying to pass it off as some all encompasing change of the game, just a really cool code alteration that he can show to people who might appreciate the addition to MM3. that said, nice work bbit |

Okay, I was wrong. I didn't think the hack was supposed to be more of an add-on than a new game. (What's an ASM hack, anyway?) Okay, now that I know the purpose of the hack, I respect it more. Now I think that, along with releasing this, you should release a level-overhaul hack. I'm currently in the middle of one, and I think that with your knowledge of reprogramming hacks, you could do unbelievable things. You would end up impressing a countless number of people for one thing-- that's always a plus. DahrkDaihz already has, with screenshots alone even. Think of being known as an elite like him. |

Very nice. I wish I had half of your asm skill, but I suppose I'll just have to work to get that far.. Heh, looks like a useful little hack. |
