Ahh, I SOOOO hate my mother's computer! Hate hate hate hate hate.

Anyways, moving along. Over the past week of using my mother's computer, there have been a few Blue Screens of Death. And they are starting to get on my nerves.

So you guys know the basics:

Windows 2000 Professional, SP4
Pentium III 450
Norton Antivirus 2003

The error:

*** STOP: 0x0000000A (parameter1, parameter2, parameter3, parameter4)
*** Address 80462733 base at 80400000, DateStamp 3ee6c002 -- ntoskrnl.exe
Beginning dump of physical memory

Now, I've looked up Stop Errors on Microsoft's site, and got this article

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=165863

But I don't think it's the right one, as there's no mention of the whole IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL thing.

The other alternative is this:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=183169

And this one seems likely because the errors happened first when Norton was scanning, then when Spybot Search and Destroy was.

I've disabled Norton for the moment, let's see how things go

But, without Spybot and Norton, do you think that say, something like AVG might do the job without bluescreening this danged thing??

Has this happened to anybody else before, and how did you resolve it?

I'm getting annoyed with it. I haven't done a danged thing to the box, and now it's doing this. It's bluescreened FOUR TIMES today, and I didn't do a thing. But I know my mother is going to blame me anyways.......

And before anybody says "Reinstall Windows", I already have that at the back of my head as an option. I just don't want to risk losing my Mum's configuration, that's all.

This probably won't help but it's worth a shot.
The only time I got a bluescreen in WinXP was when a memory slot was malfunctioning, I removed one (I had like 3) and then it worked fine. And since 2000 don't get bluescreens out of the blue (no pun intended) it may be something fishy like that.
When does it happen? On startup? Suddenly when you are in windows? or what?
For me it was on the startup. Don't you have a cdburner to burn out all my documents stuff and configs? Depending on the ram, a P2 450 can handle WinXP, my P2 400mhz did, had 256mb ram in that one (My dads 666mhz k6 with like 192mb ram can handle it too, and k6 sucks). So that's always an option if you are going to reboot anyway.

This happens suddenly while IN windows, and as mentioned in the original post, the times it has happened are frequently when something was "scanning" the computer. Twice it has been Norton, once it was Spybot Search and Destroy.

AdAware managed to scan the computer without anything happening. But I don't think I've seen the end of a Norton scan.

But whether it's the AV itself, or a piece of malware that doesn't like being scanned is weird, as I was able to finish a Norton scan last week with no problems.

Well it said something about dumping physical memory. Maybe it's the harddrive that has a bad sector and everytime Norton touches that part, it gives you a bluescreen. Too bad you can't test to see if it's that. Tried chkdsk in dos (or in windows for that matter). I once had a gamedir that was like a blackhole, if I went into it, the comp lagged like hell and eventually crashed unless I went out of it fast enough. It was a couple of soundfiles from a game that had created a new dev/null It fixed the bad sector with a chkdsk though :\

Well, for the moment I've disabled Norton, so Mum will have to be extra careful with viruses for a while. I'll see how that goes for the next few hours at least. I do have disk checkers, but they'll prolly bluescreen if what you're saying is correct. Worth a try anyways....

lalalalala... come here bloody Norton Disk Doctor.

EDIT: Yeah, you seem to be right. It picked up over 20 files that it had to move because of bad clusters. Two of which were Norton files, which explains why the problem seemed to fit the one re: AV problems in the Microsoft Knowledge Base so perfectly.

Thing is, I couldn't find anything about the Memory Dump when I searched. Good thing you had personal experience with it, I guess, or I'd still be banging my head against the wall wondering how I'd fucked over my mother's computer without doing anything wrong again!

(Saw your pm and figured you edited the last post )

Haha, cool. I'm glad you got it solved. So you can scan the comp with norton now without problems?

I'm too scared to try it. I'm sick of BSOD'ing!!!

*opens up Norton again* Good Norton, nice Norton. Be a good little Norton

EDIT: SON OF A BITCH
Blue Screen of Death.

And this time with the IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

Updating Norton, as that's one of the things Microsoft suggested. "See if there are updates available for your AV". But failing that solving the problem, I'll scrap Norton altogether.

Mum needs a new Hard Drive anyways, I guess we can start all over with a nice shiny new install then and get her AVG instead of NAV anyways Until then, let's let her bork the system.

On the positive side of all this, I get to sell my mother a hard drive. *evil capitalist laugh* BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

I don't see how an AV would cause it. A bad hard disk maybe. (In particular, the circuit panel on it is probably screwed up.) Try booting up in safe mode and just kinda letting it run, see if anything happens.
Also does it ever happen when you're offline? Could be another one of them remote holes M$ is so famous for.

Off.... line?
.... I don't *do* this alleged "offline"

Eh, I've made sure the system is patched and it is, so it's not a currently M$ known exploit anyways. But the sooner I get this box behind a Smoothwall, the better.

... god I miss my Linux. I'd run Knoppix on this thing instead but it has a bloody WINMODEM.

And yeah, according to Microsoft, an AV *can* cause a 0x0000000A error in ntoskrnl.exe. It's a known error. Yay. But why it only does it about 45 minutes into a scan is the headfuck....

Which can be run with an certain Linux program. Thought I hadn't been succeful installing anything under Knoppix without crashing it. (Knoppix is quite unstable on my other computer )

I've seen Norton AV crash (BSOD) a WinXP computer before, for no reason whatsoever. The comp worked fine, but as soon as you'd run NAV, after a while of scanning, bam! bsod. I personally use Kaspersky AV, I find it better and never had problems with it.

Chibi: It's possible to run Winmodems in Linux if you can find the right drivers. And just because M$ doesn't know of a bug doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Remember, large chunks of source code are out there, and M$ often doesn't fix things until they become well-known critical holes. As for the 45 minute thing, probably a filesystem bug, or maybe the 'IO Read Bytes" counter (you can see it in the task manager) overflowing.
Kitten Yiffer: I've seen one with physically bad clusters. The HD only measured half its capacity, and at 55% formatting, it made some very loud clunking sounds and stopped. Hehe.
Everyone: AVG is a fully-supported free antivirus with NO ads, crippleware, or other such catches. (The pro version just has more features, the way 'pro' software's supposed to. ) And it's never given me a problem, except that it likes to warn me about things that aren't really virii (but for some reason are in all the AV lists) laying dormant in my System Restore folder. But I guess that's it's job.

Physical Memory = RAM, not pagefile (pagefile, virtual memory, is just that - virtual memory).

IRQ_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL errors are almost ALWAYS RAM errors.

You can bet your last buck that it's a hardware problem either in the RAM or one of your drivers.

Those motherboards came out around the time when they were using faulty capacitors. May want to check it just to be sure. Remove and reseat all the ram sticks (possibly wiping the contacts off with a soft cloth and, if the slots are dusty, clean with canned air BEFORE removing the RAM).

HD errors usually say the HD was the cause or are just STOP errors.

To keep it from doing the memory dump (takes up HD space):

Windows Key + Break, Advanced Tab, Startup and Recovery Settings button, write debugging information: (none)

I have read that a good way to clean the contacts on a RAM module is to put a little bit of water on the contacts and wipe with a pencil eraser. Let the contacts dry before reinstalling the module. It is important not to wipe the contacts with anything dry. The water prevents the buildup of static electricity.

I would NOT even try that myself. I've NEVER had static issues when building/working on a PC.

Water + RAM = bad, my opinion...

I double checked the book that I read that in. The procedure called for contact cleaner, but it still warned about dry wiping. The procedure is suggested for removing tin oxide from gold contacts when the contact platings on the RAM module and the socket it was in did not match.

I nearly fried an ATA interface back in 2000 when I was installing a new hard disk in my main computer(a 486 at the time). I got up out of a chair, and picked up the end of the cable without touching the chassis first. I heard and felt a discharge. It was a relief to find out that it was ground pin that I touched.

I always touch the chassis first... it's subconsious already. I do it all the time.

Contact cleaner is completely different than water. A LITTLE bit of that might be safe, but soaking the RAM stick may cause some to get inside the chips, and circuitry + volaitale substance = bad
