I don't think so... I think that when you're leveling, it's because you want to kill the bosses, which doesn't level up.

I loved this game. The story was one of those where you think it's suddenly become dumb, but then once you finish the game, and play it a second time, it all makes sense and you start noticing different things that eluded you at first.

(Anybody ever watch those old Bob Ross painting shows, where he'd be doing a beautiful picture, and then he'd stick in a giant tree in the front, and you'd be thinking 'WHAT ARE YOU DOING!?', but then in the end it turns out fine? Anybody...?)

I also loved the world that Square created, and the variety in the cities.

Also, for those of us in college or thereabouts when the game came out, the atmosphere -- classes, tests, etc., but with some cool twists -- was nice and nostalgic.

Based on River Phoenix and it shows. YUM!
I've played it a bit too much, but I can watch that intro over and over again. So damn good.
Am I the only one who greatly dislikes the music in Balamb Garden and Fisherman's Horizon? That music litterally gives me headaches -.-

FF8 had some cool things about it. but there was some really shitty things about it, too.

Combat pretty much FORCED you to use the GFs, wich dragged random encounters to unneccissary lenghts cuz of animation time.

Upgrading weapons was lame. End of point.

The Draw system was boring, too.

Leveling up did NOTHING except make you do more damage (wich didnt matter, cuz the higher level you were, the more HP the bad guy had..) and gave you more money to spend on the tons of nothings there are to buy.

The plot looked interesting. i didnt get very far in the game due to the severely flawed gameplay. Maybe if it was in book form, i would read the novel.

Some errors there, Garmichael. Leveling up didn't give you ANY money because you won it becasue of your Seed rank. I was NEVER forced to use GFs, even in a low-level game.
Not every enemy followed your level.

Wasn't that the same music as during the field exam's first part (before they reached the square)?

And I agree, the gf's weren't neccessairy in regular battle; they weren't even neccessairy during boss fights because of the easy way of customizing. You only needed them equipped to actually be able to junction more spells to your characters, which, if done correctly, could make your way through the game a breeze.
And THAT was one of ff8's biggest flaws; once you figured it out, there was no more challenge.

I once tried to play FF8 while only using basic spells. Was harder. But if you can't figure out where is the 'Island Closest to Hell (or Heaven)" than it's way harder.

you can always use the tool command to refine items into other items (if I'm not mistaken), or upgrade your elemental spells.
Or draw aura from Seifer
I remember I royally fucked up on my first play through and still got to the beginning of the 4th disc.

heh...i remember playing FF8. It was an alright game. I dunno--I liked the cheesy storyline and the CG was amazing for my Riva TNT. But the game play I really didnt' like the fact that after 10k of EXP, all the characters are at 100. The junction system was okay but drawing magic was so backwards... But then again, I'm not a magic user in any FF (or most of them anyways)

Whenever people get together to talk about FF8, the main stumbling blocks seem to be two things:

1) The Draw system
2) The enemy level system

To address these points:

1) The main complaint I hear is "WTF!?!?! I HAV 2 SPEND A HOUR DRAWIN MAGIK FROM DIS ENEMI?!?"

Actually you can get magic in quite a lot of ways, the junction system is quite flexible about this. If you take the time to level up your GFs you can gain the ability to refine any sort of magic from both the triple triad cards, and your regular items. So to all the people who argue about this I say: You clearly don't know how to play the game.

2) Again the main complaint I hear goes along the lines of "WTF?!?!?! WAT RITE DUZ A MONSTA HAVE 2 LVBUTZ????"

The monsters level up so that they (theoretically) should always be able to provide a challenge. Although if people actually looked at the monsters, they'd realise that all of the monsters have proportional stats, so an easy monster will still be easy even if it is a higher level. The other reason for the monster levelling could be that at higher levels their drops and draw magic are changed, so you get relatively useful items/magic, even when you're at a high level.

There are other arguments that people put forward, like upgrading weapons is stupid, and GFs make the game easy. These arguments, to me, just smack of lazy people wanting the easy way through the game. Uprading weapons is no different to finding new weapons, you just have to find some parts. The only challenge is getting everything for everyone's final weapons. Upgrading weapons is also not neccessary to complete the game, although it makes it a lot easier.
As for GFs making the game easy, I believe that the fashion in which they are summoned balances them. Remember, they only heal when you use a GF heal item on them (Who does that?), or when you rest in an inn or tent. Animations were also not tediously long, with the exception of eden.

Sorry for the rant, but I love FF8, it's my favourite Final Fantasy, and whenever I hear people bitching about it, it normally boils down to them not being bothered to learn the system or play the game properly.

so, you are saying that ultima, holy, and flare are easy to manufacture? i didn't mind drawing for the elemental spells or for Cure/Esuna. but i dunno, I never used Ultima, Holy, or Flare in the game so I'm not sure why I'm complaining. Probably i prefer the fact that I can cast them rather then use them...

Yes, that's exactly what I'm saying. Flare is by far the easiest to obtain, I had a glut of the stones that refine to flare, Ruby dragons drop the items you need, so I had loads of copies of it. The other spells are slightly harder to obtain, but Holy refines from Moon stones which Toramas drop at mid to high levels - there are plenty of them in Esthar, and Ultima refines from Star fragments, which Iron Giants of all levels can drop. If you know which items you need, you can get all of these powerful spells, which you otherwise have to use secret draw points to obtain.

Yup, FFVIII does get bashed a lot. I wish FFX was the most bashed FF. , that's another story though.

I personally prefer FFVIII over FFIX. Unlike many, I'm actually a fan of real life proportioned characters, which was FFVIII. The storyline is a little off at some parts, but I really think if they were to make an anime out of any of the FF games, VIII would easily be the best pick.

The cinema's in this game were incredible, and every single song on the soundtrack rocks. I also liked how the summons actually had stats, and levels in this game, making you somewhat care for them more than you usually would.

The card game was also a fun minigame.

My only complaints about this game are that the gameplay was a little repetitive. Draw - Junction - Summon - Repeat and rinse. There was also no real enemy to the storyline, unless you felt Seifer was that.

Other than that I truly think FFVIII is a great RPG, awesome setting, decent charactes, awesome graphics, great storyline, incredible music, you can't go wrong with it.

*yawn* I get sleepy just thinking about FFVIII. Maybe one of these days I'll actually play through it. As of now, I forced myself to play until the end of the first disk. That in and of itself seemed like an eternity. I was actually quite glad when Squall got that big ice shard stuck in him. But seriously, I played it several times and each time I nearly fell asleep before turning it off. I won't take shot's at the game's battle system, b/c though I'm not particularly fond of it, there are no major problems with it. It's just... a boring game to me.

to me it seems like an opinion thing. even before I finished it, I liked it more than I liked VII. but some people dislike certain factors about VIII, and that's ok, they don't have to like it, they just shouldn't bash it, because it is a good game. I mean, i agree that it was incredibly easy to abuse the battle system (I hit Ultimecia with like 8 Lionhearts and 4 Shooting stars during the span of the battle because of Aura), but I liked the storyline a lot. the music from the final battle was great (I mean the very last part, the music that started off like vincent's them from VII) and for it's time it had some really good cinema scenes.

Every Final Fantasy game was equal IMO. I had almost fun playing FF6, then playing FF8 and the others. They all had good points and there flaws. In other words, there will never be a perfect Final Fantasy game which everyone will like. Because, people opinions differs too much. Personally, I liked FF8 storyline, GFs, characters.. However, the music didn't get my attention. I would have to agree with some of you, Balamb Garden & Fisherman's Horizon had the most irritated music I ever heard in a Final Fantasy game. I almost stopped playing the game because of this. Unlike other FF games, there would only have four songs on the entire soundtrack that catch my attention, which are: Only a Plank Between One And Perdition, Lunatic Pandora, Maybe I'm a Lion and The Extreme (Final Boss)... The fact that people bash FF8 more then any other game, doesn't mather; the fact that you liked it and know that you're not the only one is all that mathers. Because everyone can't like the same things.

FF8 was a great game, it was the second FF I've played (FF7 was the first). I completed it and had uber characters, with the right GFs I was able to absorb most elemental damage and nullify non-elemental damage. And "Maybe I'm a Lion" is the best final boss battle song in all history of kick ass final boss battle songs. :O

Even more complicated, you needed to find the weapon magazine.

No you didn't. That only makes it show up in the Junk Shop menu. As long as you have have the right materials, it'll appear, and you can forge it. But without the magazines, you'd probably not know what you need, unless you're playing through again or using a guide. You can actually get all the best weapons except Irvine's on the first disk. And you can get Quistis's Save the Queen before fighting Ifrit if you have the patience with cards.

Anyhow, one thing often said about FF8 is that it sucks because the main character's a jackass. Ironically, most of the people who say that are FF7 fanboys, and their main character is no different. But it's more realistic having a jackass loner as a main character than having, say, a pervert as a main character.

And the best thing about FF8 is that it's easy to powerlevel. Just go through the game at a low level, which is very easy, and once you get the Stat Boost abilities, attach 4 of them to a character, kill the others off, and train.

I liked FF8 enough to play it up to the last boss, which is mysteriously what I do with most RPGs I play. The "plot twist" at the end irritated me though. Also, I never liked way magic was treated like items. The junction system was kind of neat, and used that to good effect (except it was highly annoying to tinker with when you switched parties a lot, like in certain plot sequences), but it never felt right having a limited number of each spell that wouldn't replenish or anything. I think of magic as something your character learns and can replenish if it runs out.

Also. If I played through it again (though I didn't like it that much), I wouldn't learn the Boost ability. The summon animations were kind of neat, but it was annoying feeling obligated to pound the square button instead of focusing on them.

One thing I liked was the timed attack for your main character.. More RPG's should have those. They work really well in all of the Mario RPG's. =D =D =D
