Ok, like I said, I'm looking for some help getting VNC to work on my linux box. Here's the scoop as it stands.

  • Installed Fedora Core 2 and picked the vnc package at install, all is good.
  • Ran vncserver to setup login information, and generate auto-start info.
  • Process is running.

However in spite of all this, I can still not login to VNC, nore can I go the other way and initiate the connection from the server to a listening client.

I'm only comming up with one of two possibilities. 1) I've missed something important, or maybe there is something on the linux box that is preventing me from connecting, like a firewall, though I can connect using SSH, so unless it blocked some ports but not all..... ??

Any suggestions?

Yarx, I am running a VNC Server on my webserver (this server) with an entire full X-Windows session running.....

This is how you have to connect with your viewing client

hostname:1
or
IP:1

when connecting to a linux machine you HAVE to specify the session number.

Because putting :1 tells the client to connect to 5901 instead of 5900

In windows there are no "sessions" and it's just 5800 / 5900

likewise if you want to connect through a web browser you have to go to

http://hostname:5801
or
http://ip:5801

as you again, have to connect to 5801 instead of 5800

Catch me on IM sometime, and I will tell you how to get it to run a full xwindows session, instead of the crappy shell it runs by default
