While it's a nice idea in theory to have it update the preview every time you type something or so, whenver I click on one of the fields it decides to update.

Only problem is, the focus then leaves that field. Uh oh.

That makes it impossible for me to edit things because clicking on the field / tabbing to them makes them refresh and therefor letting something else steal focus.

I use Opera, btw. I brought this up with Jesp but don't see it on the devpage.

I suggest just using an "Update Preview" button instead.

I tried to tell Jesper this, to just do it standard with HTML and CSS and Forms and just have a submit button

but NOOO he REFUSED to fucking do it the simple way... and HAS to use his stupid javascript crap, which obviously continually chooses to not work in more and more browsers... eventually he's going to end up disabling it for everythign but firefox.... which is still just stupid....

not to mention all the wasted time and effort into the Javascript crap for no reason, since it DOESN'T WORK FOR ANYBODY......

It hardly works for me, and that's in firefox.
I think a button would be better, especialy because it keeps slowing my browser down everytime update the preview with text, ect.

It works in all versions of the following browsers that I have tested: Firefox (0.9 and 0.9+ nightly build), Opera (7.5), Safari (1.2). With Javascript disabled it works perfectly fine in Firefox (both versions), Opera, Safari, and all versions of Windows IE on my system (6.0, 5.5, 5.0). I wouldn't call say "it doesn't work for anybody". Firefox is a special case because it's updated so often and we have a very spread out user base (a lot of people are still using 0.8, even, and tons of people are all using 0.9, 0.9.1, 0.9.2, 0.9.3 and different nightlies respectively, and then there's normal Mozilla too).

The Update Preview button and a checkbox for enabling auto-preview at will, as well as some changed event handlers (handle the preview updating when you leave a field, if anything, and not when you enter a field) will all fix this, and I apologize for leaving this vital part out at first (it was planned from the beginning).

"and HAS to use his stupid javascript crap, which obviously continually chooses to not work in more and more browsers..."

There are two sorts of errors here, design errors and browser errors. Browser errors are when Win IE and Mac IE choose to not give a shit about stylesheets inserted, leaving us with a layout preview Javascript version that doesn't work the same in all browser. The simple answer is disabling the Javascript version to make it use the method that reloads your form instead. Design errors are worse, though. This was a design error. Assigning the wrong event handler, leaving out proper options and blindly assume that everyone using Javascript want autoupdate was a very bad design error on my part. This will all be fixed, though, as mentioned, and I reiterate that the Javascript will work like a charm for all browsers good enough to support the - pretty basic and made standard over six years ago - capabilities it needs in the next update.

If ErkDog would have his way, there would be absolutely no Javascript features whatsoever on this board. Good, say some. Bad, say some. I say that as long as it works properly (sort of didn't here), adds slight value to the ones that can take advantage of it, and doesn't result in reduced service for others, it's in in my book. I don't expect or demand others to code Javascript versions and PHP versions of the same code, as it happens in some extreme cases (like here), but I'm totally happy to do it and won't whine about it, because I know that it does its part to making the board easier and smoother to use. As long as it works, that is.

well I guess we'll have to do more testing on javascript crap before we publish.... I mean.... we'll have to send people to the dev site to test stuff, which of course will undoubtedly delay our releases... but coding will still progress I guess, and once certain features get coded with JScript we'll just have to delay that release until a bunch of ppl go to the dev site and test it

btw, I was really drunk and high when I made that last post , hahah

First of all, the obvious: drunk and high, as opposed to?

Yes, we'll have to do testing, and lots of it. In fact, if you're interested in testing the new features we'll be adding report to me or Erk and we'll see. We will probably single it down to a handful of testers, not everyone will get in. If you have an unusual browser or an older version of a usual browser this might be your chance to make sure the new stuff will work in that browser. (But this does not mean we want one tester for every possible browser version out there. Just so we're clear on that.)

lol Jesper, it's not like they can't just go to http://dev1.acmlm.org

and test the stuff, and it's not like it would HURT to have MORE testers, even if they are on standard more mainstreamish browsers, because I mean hell, maybe someone will see something we don't

[18:49:45] wootest: the browser bit was so we could have about half of the testers with 'mainstream' browsers and the other half with older browsers, because we don't want to break shit in either
