Define art. Also (a question some of you may remember), would you consider abstract art that does not mean anything to be art? |

art to me is just another way to express who we are as individuals and to convey ideas that words and other forms of media just can't do... abstract art is art i believe...but giving an opinion on what it represents is out of my league |

Everything that is called art by the creator is art... Silly yeah, but there is so strange pieces of art that you can techincally call anything art today. Althought then you can say there is both good and bad art. |

Art is when a person uses various techniques to convey emotion and character to someone else to decipher. Will that do? |

my definition of art = the representation of abstract things in a logical way. based on this definition, computer programming could be considered an art form (our idea of what we want the computer to do is abstract, yet computers are the epitome of pure logic, and as such we can only instruct it with pure logic), but it's certainly not the only art form. our ideas, the way our minds work, it is abstract; going by feelings, emotions, ideas, and the like, which cannot be quantified or losslessly translated into something hard and logical. however, we cannot read one anothers' minds, so we must translate them into logical media: spoken or written language, drawings/paintings, music, gestures, or the like. not only that, but we must translate them back into abstract ideas (interpretation), which is what makes communication interesting. consider this very post, for example... what I want to express begins as an abstract concept in my mind, which I translate into the english language, and type into a box on the computer. this text is then transmitted over the network, and stored in the database, as cold, hard, logical, zeroes and ones. when someone views it, it's translated back into on-screen text, which is read by the viewer, who then interprets that back into an abstract concept in his/her mind. there are many ways in which I could render english-language text based on the abstract concepts I started with (not to mention numerous actual languages to choose from, if I were to know any others well enough for it to be practical), and many ways in which it could be interpreted... so to express oneself well enough that others will be more likely to interpret it in the way you want- in other words, to actually transmit abstract concepts across a logical network- that is definetely an art form. and the way people do this often says more about them than the actual ideas they're trying to express. </philosophicating> (edited by Vystrix Nexoth on 03-19-04 01:44 PM) |
