I get edgy about posting in one if it's a week old since the last person has posted in it but if I have something to contribute to the thread, then i'll post in it |

If its a valid question that hasn't been answered, say on rom hacking, I don't think its too big a deal if something is bumped in that circumstance.

But only if the question's answered. That's the thing - anyone can bump a thread with a cruddy post, but there are the rare circumstances where the post does answer a question *OR* the person actually makes the bump worthwhile. |

But rarely is there a thread where a question goes unanswered, and the topic is just plain forgotten for over a week.

Cervantes, change your font color please. White on white is very hard to read. People bump because they are not informed. If more people read the FAQ, there would be less bumping *not* |

Or was it ever broken? We'll never really know. The mystery of the layout will go down in history as unsolved...

The mystery is called: CCS stylesheet wouldn't load. And back to the topic, register.php should redirect to the FAQ, like I've seen on the backup (so let's say, like before) |

So that they'd have to read the faq before joining?! IT'S BRILLIANT!!!!! If that's what you mean. |

So that unless they signed it or something, they couldn't veiw any other page?! That's even more brilliant than my first inconcieved notion! |

I think that closing threads after they have been bumped is action taken too late. Closing bumped threads may even be a hindrance to the overall enjoyment of the site, as many users may want to post a meaningful reply. I think an automatic thread closure system may be a good way to prevent bumping in the first place. The thread table could have a column added that stores a time that the thread would be automatically closed. When some action is taken on the thread, such as posting, editing, or moderation, the autoclose time is set to at least the current time plus some amount that could be adjusted on a site or forum basis. When the thread is viewed by a logged on user, a similar update could be performed, but with a sooner point in the future. Before any script reveals the closure state of the thread, a check could be performed on the autoclose time to see if it has expired and close the thread it if necessary. As for users not reading the FAQ, perhaps a rules quiz could be a mandatory part of the registration process. |

Sounds like a good idea. Different timelengths for different forums though. Like two weeks for forums like sports where there's not much activity, and a week or five days for crazy and general chat. Maybe like a month for spam-battling forum.

Common sense, people. A) We've been here. We've had a thread about this. B) Why are we here when we've been here before...and... C) Not in the mood to make up a point for C. I'll take Anya's overused 'There is no 3.' Point is, who cares? Really. If a thread is bumped, it will probably be closed. If someone spams, they'll probably be banned. If someone pisses someone off, there'll probably be retribution...which could lead to banning. If there's a toilet to be flushed, it'll probably be flushed...you see what I'm saying? Common sense. |

You know what would be tastefully ironic? If this thread was ignored for a month, and then I bumped it. *taste the irony* |

I think that there was a subject at one time so. *Returns to subject* People bump threads ussually just to get a post. *Gives example of how it would work* Okay say that a person has allready spammed on every other thread and they still want more posts, so what do they do? They bump a thread that isn't even on the same page as they had been posting. Thus they do it just for a single post. Most likely they will get banned anyway for spamming, but not allways are they caught. For instance say I bumped a thread that was really old and then someone posted after me and then another person posted. My post would most likely be overlooked because people posted after me. Earlier there was a discussion about the Faq. Well I think that every forum should have a link for people just starting out so they have to read through that before they can post in that forum...These are simply my thoughts, that is all... |
