Should the SMW board be split in two?One sub-board would be for newbie questions and information; the second sub-board would be for ROM hack releases and previously uncharted progress in understanding SMW. | Yes |

Someone has thrashed the thread table structure and I fear that was you, YD... edit, now that's funny... now it is fine again... *slaps the IE process with a bunch of random TSS commands* What exactly should be the problem about that? When I replied to the thread first time, noone yet said anything about ROMs (I, in fact, realized that it was meant as nonsense only when someone brought up stuff about emulators with internet multiplayer). There are many MMORPGs out there, why can't you make one which is mario themed (edited by blackhole89 on 08-06-04 03:03 PM) |

I think that a new forum couldn't really be justified as there wouldn't be much activity asides from one or two hackers. And the insane newbies who post in the wrong place. Plus, elitism is evil. |

This is not uncommon to have a large number of threads here, since LM, as stated in some posts above, is really fairly easy to use and no other editor ever featured a that user-friendly UI in my existance. Don't forget, LM became more and more popular; when I signed up in June 2002, there were a lot less threads here; the posting frequency was lower and most hacks were usually level only hacks - thus custom ASM hacks were rare in these games (still today, but we have more people who _could_ include them into their hacks ^^) But I'm leading a german RM2k/3 forum; similar to LM the editor also has its few years and still people ask "What is a switch ?", "Why does the treasure chest open again and again when ?" or "I can pass water on my world map!"; but we gonna have to live with it. That's the purpose of stickied threads or one FAQ. On the other hand people usually don't read these stickied FAQs, even if you put them into font size 30 with blinking pink/white effects with twenty exclamation marks (a little exaggerated), some read, some don't read them. There are advantgaes and disadvantages. On the one hand threads are cluttered up; some of them may get into the "wrong" forum; some might not understand why there are two forums. On the other hand, a separation into two forums SMW Hacking Questions and Discussions "General and technical, also ASM-related, stuff goes into this forum" and SMW Showcase "Here goes all your hacks you want to present. Make sure to read thw FAQ before!" |

I actually haven't noticed a lot of newbie posts...a beginner board won't stop them from actually reading the posts, though.

I say no, mainly because the n00bs should be intelligent enough to at least look at what all the other noobs have posted. Therefore a FAQ pertaining to the subject matter is more appropriate. If all else fails, just ban them for not getting their facts straight.

Yeah, let's just ban people for asking straight forward questions. That doesn't sound elitist at all.

No splitting the forum! There should be no reason for it. There may be lots of threads about simple stuff, but if the newbies had read the help file in LM, they would know how to do it. It is just common sense. Sure, Lunar Magic is one of the easiest tools to rom-hack with, but who cares? So what if it is easy for people to learn it? Sure there are lots of newbie hacks floating around, but think about this: all rom-hackers started the same way. They made some crappy hack with loads of errors and stuff. I guaruntee you that everyone's first hack (released or not) was really crappy. They also probably posted something really stupid at the beginning, too. I know I did. I know some others did. For you people that think Lunar Magic sucks because of its user-friendliness: don't post here. There is no reason for you to. You people think every hack sucks from the beginning just because the person who hacked it uses rips from other games or their homemade graphics suck. Get over it! You don't like LM, don't talk about LM. But there is one thing you don't even take into consideration: Level design. The level design is the key aspect to any game or hack. Demo World has good design, even though it uses rips from other games. Not every hack has to have ASM to be good. In conclusion, newbies will post here with these questions, even though they could read the help file. Later, they will probably not even ask questions and start releasing some awesome hacks. How long that will take depends on the user. If they relie on this forum to answer every question, then they probably won't get used to it. Others might post maybe one or two questions at the beginning and will probably make a cool hack afterwords. It all depends on who has common sense to read the help file. I vote no. No need to. |

It's not a matter of thinking that "Lunar Magic sucks", it's a matter of a) using existing tools to do things which people have been doing previously, or b) actually creating things which have not previously been possible or have not been addressed with the current tools. Note that I'm not at all for the idea of all the "l33t ROM h4x0rs" abandoning this board to go off and create a utopia of SMW knowledge; there's no reason why anyone who is active here would cease to be active with a second board. The real issue is whether or not the board is too involved with supporting the current tools and if this involvement is stunting the growth of future forays into SMW hacking. After thinking about the situation and receiving input from others in the community, I think that the volume of questions is not so much that it inhibits real development. As far as I can tell, the true death of forward-thinking SMW development came with the board crash and the prospect of losing all that knowledge. I'm not sure what it'll take to spur development again, but I doubt splitting the board will help it now. As such, this thread is out of sync with my current thoughts about the SMW hacking community; if anyone would like to close it, be my guest. |

You guys don't get. If you hack without the use of Lunar Magic, you will be HARDCORE. |

Way to stroke the flames, knuck. Once again, whether or not you use LM is not the issue. I'm sure everyone uses LM when they need to design levels, as LM is a great tool for doing what it does. Unfortunately, all it does is allow you to make levels. It doesn't allow you to change the health of Chucks, or modify the status bar, or add a powerup, or even add custom blocks. It's a tool with a well-defined niche and it serves its purpose very well, but it certainly shouldn't be the be-all and end-all of hacking. Here's an analogy: let's say that five years ago, the only tool that existed for editing SMW was a palette changer. While it'd be foolish to say "der, only noobs use the palette changer", I think that it'd be equally foolish to say "Isn't palette hacking enough for you, or do you have to be HARDCORE?!" |

Look in GENERAL ROMHACKING amd search for asm hacks. You won't even find that much level hacks. most will be graphic changes. |

One argument that has been neglected is just how many people would actually be "qualified" to post on the 1337 ASM board. I know I sure wouldn't, and most of the board would be the same way.
