Heres the thing. Yeah, its usualy unacceptable to have a hack posted up without screenshots. I'm going to get to that, a little later on today you'll have some screens to get your grubby little hands on

anyways, the hack. What is it? Well, Luna and Sol are to Gold and Silver as Fire and Leaf are to Red and Green(Blue). Yes, a restoration hack by MajinBlueDragon and Coolboyman based off Fire Red's engine. Many n00bs have tried in the past, and many have failed. Miserably. And after months of progress I felt is about time to make an anouncement. You might figure this is a simple remake, hm? You could say that, but then again was FR/LG just a simple remake of Red/Green? Heres whats down with Luna and Sol.

The map designer on this project is none other than Coolboyman, author of the infamous Pokemon Brown (which, in the eyes of many, is perhaps the greatest hack of Pokemon Red to date). He has been working hard to make the maps not only close to the original, but with a little somthing extra to add that "advanced step" to it, just like Fire and Leaf.

Graphics and sound are being done by yours truly. I must thank Remy for a bit of help on item and tilesets, as well as the artist formerly known as Mareep for allowing his gym leaders to be a base for my own. However, I am quite proud of what I have done myself. In addition to fully functional male and female heros, the Pokemon have all been ugraded from their Gold version form into their 16-bit glory. Thats right, completly recolored Pokemon, authentic to the original style. A few such as Wartortle or Tediursa remain the same as in F/L, however, I found that they suited it more.

Sound. Very few hacks now adays utalise this. Once again, yours truly has been hard at work designing the soundtrack for this hack. Perhaps an MP3 demo may be apropriate? If enough interest is sparked, then I won't hesitate. Your favorite old-school sounds from back in Johto have been restored as acuratly as possible, in the "advance style" used in both Ruby/Sapphire and Fire/Leaf. I even went the extra step and utalised a few extra instrumental sounds which were not present in the original game.

Replay value? Very few hacks now adays go that extra step for the players. As most people loved that hidden island feature in Fire Red, a special island has been designed from scratch by Coolboyman, which allows Pokemon from Ruby and Sapphire to be captured. I even included a few songs from Ruby and Sapphire locations, to add that nostalgic taste to the air.

What are we planning? Adding secret bases back into the game is up in the air--it might end up in there, it might not. Also, we are currently working hard (and thanks to a little help from Kawa finding a script or two) in order to get day and night functionality working as well as day-activated events. A Pokegear is also in the works.

Who else has contributed to this project? We've worked up quite a bit of hype among hackers who know us, so much that so many people wanted to lend us their support. TheChainDog has been incredibly helpful, if it was not for him I probably would not have been as adept at my graphic restoration skills. Jason was a great help in providing information from the original games, and throwing out ideas of how we could make them work with the advanced engine, as well as checking up on us and making sure we were working steadily. Kawa has been extremly helpful with his time-related Rubikon scripts, and hes just been generaly supportive the whole time. And last but not least, Remmy contributed his work to some item and tileset peices, while Mareep was kind enough to allow his Johto Gym leaders to be used as a spriting base for my edits.

When can you expect a demo? Hopefully, a demo will be released in the near future, but great things cannot be rushed. We are working hard to bring you the best possible hack, and that takes time. With patience and dedication, this hack will hopefully encourage other hackers-to-be to do better, more full-fledged hacks. Some screenshots can be expected as late as tomorrow, though I hope to have some up for you all tonight. Any comments you have, feel free to leave 'em here. I'm open to anything you have to say

I hadn't heard anything about this project earlier, unless Kawachan slipped a line or two. If he did that, then I have just forgot that...

Nice, now i'm just waiting for a offical Gold and Silver remake... *cough* (you never know )

At least your giving us info, that's good... but we also want proof. But I belive this hack is real. Keep it up, and post some screenshots.

Nice that there is some sound hacking, I know how it works but hadn't been bothering looking into it.

Keep the secret base thing, it adds depth to the game. Especially if you play it on the real GBA with another player. (hopefully the linking works on hacked games ) I love the secret base thing, mostly becuse I like designing my room. And I like to battle people I know at anytime.

I don't think Linking works on any ROM, hacked or unhacked. The reason is so: it was programmed to use a special hardware that has special software. This software uses the hardware to tell the game it's ready for the transfer. This software and hardware also works with Sapphire/Ruby/FR/LG, as they check for both the hardware and the software (I think). If it's not found, the link attempt is canceled. If it's found, it waits for a signal of some sort that the transfer is ready. Then the data transfer begins. The transfer must continue until the link is over. The game checks for the hardware/software constantly until the link sequence is over. also, the hardware and/or software check for a valid game on the other end.
E.x.
GBA - - - - - - Cable============================Cable---Gba2
GBA sends a signal to Cable to check for a valid game at Gba2.
Gba2 mirrors.
Cable checks.
It gets signal.
Both games are notified.
Transfer begins.
Now, the only way for this to be possibly is to make some currently-impossible VBA-compatible software that links up two seperate VBA windows using seperate SGMs and/or seperate ROMS.
This is not possible. Thus, linking is not possible. Realize that I could be wrong- this is just a theory. A very likely one.
However, you can "trick" the player:
Make it seem like it's linking up.
Let's say ya wanna trade.
It picks a trainer at random to send the data that's required over.
There should be several trainers. They each should have different data.
The trainer is picked at random.
So you'd encounter trainers with different teams and record corner data every time until you've encountered all of them.
This would require probably heavy ASM to recreate most of it.
But, if you have the code for all the link features, just modify it and do the nessecary changes from there. Before you try this, however, you may want to try to implement link-up features to link up with a seperate ROM instead of a randomly picked trainer with random data inside the game. That's not linking up.
Asmuch as it can seem so.
Oh, and you wanna base for day/night code? MetalBlueKirby's most recent posts, EliteMap FAQ, Page 7, one has the base code.
org whatever
checkflag whatever
if lastresult true go to whereever(1)
if lastresult false whereever(2)
break
org whereever(1)
(change weather back to normal)
unsetflag
break
org whereever(2)
(change weather to, perhaps, BIT DARK, or make a new weather setting, NIGHT)
setflag
break
You'll need real flags, you'll need to check that no tiles are glitched in the weather, they shouldn't be
check the post for more details
put in map script
it is guaranteed that you will need to modify this code, as I have no idea how to make it check the time of day. Probably ASM.

hmmmm...I was thinking along the lines of having 3 sets of pallets...Morning, Day, Night (hey, theres enough room ) and having it switch between them at designated times...oh, of course Pokemon data would change too for tall grass and (I think at least a few) caves and forests. Only thing is, 3 sets per map...:s we'll have to look into this a little more.

And Kitten Yiffer, as far as screenshots go...don't worry. I'm trying to get in touch with the mappist, so he can in turn show me his most recent work and I can add on my graphical edits and compile screenshots from it. I know I said I'd try to get some tonight but...I promise, tomorrow won't be fruitless least I can do is post up a sound MP3 of sorts...let me get to that

I'm Jason, the dude who helped Majinbluedragon with loads of ideas and stuffs.

Before this hack was ever started. I used to have my own progrss but I gave up due to reallife and other works that are more improtant than the hacks. When I about to revive it, CBM gave me news about his progress that I didnt know before. Instead of revivng it, I gave away ALL OF MY IDEAS to him, including sprites, buildings, and other GFX stuffs, contributed by Remy35, Cuddles & DeltaSuicune.

I really hope this hack progress going very well.

MBKirby, I was talking about transferring the game over to a flash cart. Were I would use it on the real GBA.

And oh, linking emulation works. I know as I have tested it, check out This thread.

I'm gonna test out a rom hack with the linking, probably should work unless there is some wierd checksum thing.

Majinbluedragon, yeah we also want MP3's. I have only heard custom made music by bouche so far.

...your hacking Fire red before the US version get's released?

probably not, as our hacks have been in the works since early late december and the names were decided a tiny bit later. And yeah...hacking the japanese one,,yeah, with the american release so close, it seems pointless? We figured why wait around, get as much work done as possible and port it all--maps, graphics, the whole nine yards into the english verrsion. its all the same data-wise, just a few pointers here and there and we're set. Anyways, I'm talking to CBM. I'm getting screens and MP3's to post up, so its not as though I'm all talk

Ok, i'm mostly intrested in the MP3's. How many hacks are going to have custom music?

Ok, I don't know you will do the porting. I hadn't heard it being done before, but good luck.

Holy ----! I didn't think porting a ROM Hack from CPU to GBA is legal! As it is, I don't even have flash hardware. I get my ROMS at sites. I'd get Ruby, but someone's site (forget Acmlm name, sorry) (at my thread that was closed (GDI, I didn't respond in time to remove the--)) is blocked by AOL Parental Controls, I need AIM for Interdpth to send it to me (I use IM), and the APCC isn't working...

If you find out how to make Day and Night support such as Day/Night only events and stuff, please tell me.
Also, I'm gonna ask this as calmly as possible, but, considering t would be a revolution in hacking to me...

basicly, I could tell ya h ow to do the pallets inf ree space, but thats about it. Just create the pallet you want, inser t it to any blank space of the rom, and point to it from the appropriate location. actualy not hard at all

Fine. I do need the palette info...
Then, if it's possible to make new tilesets, I can use the new palette and make...
a Kirby tileset so that...
if EliteMap gains a feature to make new maps...
I CAN MAKE KIRBY'S FOUNTAIN OF DREAMS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
OH YEAH!
I hope these features are acquired...

This hack sounds very promising, mbd. Oh, and Metal Blue Kirby, can you put that picture in your signature, if you have to have it? It looks rather odd in the header..
