Just wondering, I know we discussed this on the old forum, and I know the repsonse seemed positive towards the idea, so...

What is the possibility of setting up a Political / Religious / Contraversial type forum? Seeing as how there were a few topics on religion, politics, etc, that got a little out of hand, it would provide a place that these topics can be freely discussed with decreased likelihood of flaming.

The response on the old forum to this idea was pretty positive, as there were a few people who wanted to discuss these things but thought that they might get into trouble discussing things freely in General Chat.

The idea is also that the forum has some pretty straightforward and serious ground rules, to avoid spamming and flaming, but allows people the opportunity to speak openly about contraversial topics. It also avoids such topics making the mood of General Chat "sour" and helps people who don't want to discuss these things to better avoid them.

Anyways, now we're on a new forum, and while the paint's still fresh, is it worth considering setting one of these up now?

I asked for this quite a while back, I think about a year or so ago. They said that that is what The Officer's Club is for. Serious discussion. The description was even chnaged after I requested it because the description was something along the lines of "Kick back and have a drink. Discuss the things heavy on your mind" People would go crazy in there about stupid things.

Yeah, I've been told that "Officers Club" is for that kind of thing too, but the thing is, it winds up being used for "personal discussion" stuff more, so there's confusion as to where this kind of contraversial, religious, political stuff goes. A lot of it winds up in General Chat too...

I think that having a seperate forum explicitly for it would remove some of the confusion as well. Either that or changing the description of Officers Club to reflect that it's for serious contraversial stuff too....

"A place to come and get out all your troubles, and talk to fellow kind souls, whether you're seeking advice or just needing to get a tale off your weary heart, whether it be a sad tale, or an encouraging one. Please, no flaming or spam. This is a very serious forum, and any such actions will have immediate consequences."

This description does sort of make it sound like a group therapy session... The description should be changed definitely, or make a new forum for these sorts of things.

So, lets tally the votes:

*Janus votes new forum

It'd be nice to not have it mixed in with the craziness and general discussions which seem to harbour all threads that no one wants to place anywhere else.

So yeah, new forum sounds good.

Guns God and Government Forum as Manson would say. We got our controversy (guns are controversial... plus they settle a lot of controversies ), our religion, and our politics all summed up right there ;-)

LOL -- yeah, like I said, every other time I've bought this up, or seen it bought up, it has seemed to be a popular idea, it's just we've never actually had it implemented by the staff. o.o

That's why I posted again now. While the forum's still new and shiny and all

The order? Someone said it takes like 2 minuts to add a forum, its just that they only add it if most of the mods/admins think it is neccessary. They dont want a repeat of the ZELDA HACKING forum. It was instantly made because it made sense, but it was horribly inactive.

The staff are probably just scared for flamage.

I asked about the Political forum recently, they said no when I asked if they would add it... (Once an staff member said "This is the reason why we won't add an political forum, and pointed on a closed thread which did got abit little offtopic...)

But I do like the idea. Honestly I really would want an forum like that. Yes some of thoose topics would fit General/Officer club. But an seperate forum is better...

We want an yes or no this time, not maybe...

The idea behind having a specific forum for it is to try to keep threads ON topic as well. The reason a seperate forum would keep things on topic more is:

  • Only those interested in religious/political/etc topics would go into the forum
  • There would be strict rules on the forum to make sure everybody behaves sensibly
  • Those that are offended by such things would be encouraged not to participate; therefore the likelihood of flaming goes down
  • You set up a moderator specifically for the forum to keep those things at a minimum

I've seen this stuff in action before, and I think it's a better system than the current one where there's confusion on where to put things, flames when people get offended at often quite rational posts, and no real understanding on what the policies are on that kind of thing.

This is the first time looking at this forum, and this thread immediatly caught my attention. Why hasn't it been implimented if people agree? Is there any devil's advocate?

Let's see... my threads with "No crap" in them needed the "No crap" because they'd drown in stupid posts like it's usually the case in GC. Having them moved to a non-fitting forum, Officer's Club, entirely killed those threads. If there was a forum like suggested here, all this wouldn't've been necessary. I could've just posted those threads there, without the "No crap", because the forum itself stands for that, and nobody'd keep getting on my back 'bout them. So, count me in as a vote for such a new forum.
