I'm hacking SMB and wanted to change the palette colours for a Goomba but when I search for the palette address (22 36 17 0F (I used nesticle to find it)) in hex workshop or nespaled (I used both just in case one was somehow different from the other) it says the string doesn't exsist. I've searched for mario's palette as well and was successful. I can't seem to find anything else though, all other palette addresses don't seem to exist. I've seen palette hacks on the enemies from other SMB hacks so I know it's possible, dose anyone have any ideas?

If you really just want to change the colors, its very easy!

Open the LM and load your ROM. After, click in level, change palletes and edit colors. You will see the follow palletes:

NOTE: I have used the first level as example.

Back Area: The blue part in the background...
FG Pallete: The ground where Mario walks...
BG Pallete: The background...
Sprite Pallete: All the sprites like enemies and etc...
Mario Pallete: The Mario pallete. NOTE: You can change the option as you want, but won't alter in the real game. Just if you click in the various colors in the left side of the screen.

If you want other colors instead that, just change with the pallete.

Glad to help!

This is a SMB problem, not SMW. There is a biiiiiiiiiiig difference between the two. Lunar Magic edits SMW, not SMB

Hmmm... I think you should try only two of the numbers (22 36, 36 17, or 17 0f) You might find it by that way, as one of the numbers could be off...

Nothing seem to match up. Even searching with only 22 36, 36 17, 17 0F doesn't bring anything remotely close to the string nesticle gave me. I also change some of the numbers I did find, no colour change.

The right palette is 22 0F 36 17. Search for 0F 36 17, and you should get 2 results. The second one is the Goomba palette.

Can I safely assume that the that the transparent colour (22) can be replace by others? For future reference on other sprites.

IIRC, the transparent color is always ignored, so I think that changing it has no effect at all. I may be wrong though: I'm not really a SMB expert. I haven't been hacking it for one or two years, and I didn't do anything significant back then.

BTW, the actual background colors for all(?) levels are stored one after the other:
22 22 0F 0F 0F 22 0F 0F 22

I was only using it to extract the palette information. I normaly use nnnester to acually play the roms.

Lest we forget that NESticle was the first (and still only, to my knowledge) support real-time tile editing.

Not to mention that it's the o nly emu that runs decent on this POS .. but still.

Having fun hacking SMB?
