BBC News Spong News Rockstar North's game, Manhunt, has been blamed by the mother of a murdered schoolboy for influencing her son's murder. Rockstar North have long been involved with videogame controversy, being the famed developers behind GTA3 and GTA Vice City. Although the game is famous for many brutal, bloody and violent scenes, many authorities have rejected the link between the game and the murder. Such authorities include the European Leisure Software Publsher's Association (ELSPA), The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) and children's welfare group Young Minds. "It should not be available and it should not be available to young people." For the murderer in question, it was not legally available to him. The game carried an 18 rating by the BBFC, which is enforced by law. This sort of blind scapegoating is stupid. The parents are acting outside of their experience and exploiting their position in the media to attack something they simply don't understand. (edited by Kasumi-Astra on 07-29-04 08:40 AM) |

People don't have the time or desire to understand issues like this anymore, so they just stick with the easy answers/solutions.... Common problem these days, unfortunately. |

The logic these parents use astounds me. I actually wrote a Letter to the Editor about this issue a year or so back. The main point was that by this same logic, we can conclude that religion is evil (Because fringe terrorist groups twist it to meet their demands and then use it as the basis for their terror) and should also be kept away from children. |

Here we go again... But it's understandable, people actually want to blame on something. Nowdays it's a fad to blame on games, before it was movies. Sure there is people who have been influenced by Movies and games to do stuff, but then there is something wrong with that guy/gal if she/he get's influenced doing awful stuff. ...I still rembember the publicity when the first GTA was released. XD |

this type of stuff will always happen. if you think about it, what makes her son so special? I mean, what prevented the guy, who murdered her son, not to murder someone else instead? the way I see it, that guy could have murdered anyone and just happened to pick her son. Even then, why is her son hanging out with such that guy anyways? |

You know, the parents in question were probably growing up in like the 60s and 70s, so of COURSE they think games and stuff are evil, because they grew up when it was a very perfect time. They expect things to not have changed. They expect it to be the perfect utopia it was 30 years ago. Times have changed, and none of the older people want to accept it. Just because my mom could turn her school projects in early, before it was due, doesn't mean I can do that now. Just because rainbows and hippies were in back then, ABSOLUTELY doesn't mean they're in now. (thank goodness. ) Well anyway, if I were to somehow become a parent, right now, in the current times, like suddenly jump from 16 to 32, I woulnd't blame violence on games, because I play games all the time, and I know FOR AN ABSOLUTE FACT they don't make me violent. The WORST thing that may happen is that I go "DAMMIT DKJR, EAT THE WATER!", but I won't throw the controller at the TV or anything, or take it out on anyone. |

I've played Manhunt. Does this mean I'm going to murder someone too? Oh, and if I kill Cymoro, will he leave weapons and/or gold so I can loot his corpse? Hold on, a cop just spawned outside my door. He looks tough. Maybe if I kill him I'll get enough XP to get stronger. Ugh, if people are stupid/insane, he could play Tetris and still kill someone. Someone should make a graph that shows the percentage of people who play violent games and commit murder, and the percentage of people who play violent games and live through life just fine. The media just lovvves statistics. |

omg guyz. I just played halo, I am now going to proceed to build a time machine and go into the future. when I am there, I am going to don a protective armor suit, and pick up a futuristic machine gun and proceed to kill about 12 million aliens. at the conclusion, I will leave with a vague refrence to a possible sequel and ride off into the intergalactic sunset. oh, and techno music just puts a whole in your head. |

The only way you can link a game to a murder is if the murder EXACTLY replicates something that happened in the game. And even then, I think it's more a question about the person's saneness rather than the link. |

You know, this reminds me of back in the days when people thought D&D would make you go out and kill people. I'll assume that you've all read Jack Chick's "Dark Dungeons," and refer you to it if you haven't. People are too gullible these days, they'll eat up anything that gets fed to them. There have been thousands of violent games that nobody's even raised an eyebrow at, yet when one of them goes mainstream, everybody hates it because apparently it causes kids to kill. So here's my question: What about Conker's Bad Fur Day? Hundreds of parents bought that, thinking it'd be a child's game, only to find it a rauchy sex farce. But the media didn't talk about that. Or all of the Half Life mods? I've seen maybe one or two stories referring to it. Mafia? That's got tons of criminal elements in it, never seen it mentioned. Thief? Nope, passed over. Come to think of it, until GTAIII came out, video games were deemed a fun and interesting way to pass time. Suddenly we get a game that emulates you doing something bad but exciting, and thousands of parents and authorities jump on it because they claim that it made children start resorting to violence. The GTA games were an experiment that Rockstar wanted to try, and it worked, they became popular and people started talking about the cool stuff they did with cars in it.I say, if you're crazy enough to kill someone you shouldn't be playing video games. But that's just me, and another opinion that's "just me" is that anyone who claims video games lead to violence is full of crap. And another thing, what about GTA I and II? They had everything the other GTA games had, but suddenly it gets depicted in 3D and people can't handle it? What the hell... |

People need to blame something other than themselves. I beleve that If someone kills a person, it's their fault not the fault of something else. | |||

Much more than weekly, people don't plead insanity anymore, they plead GTA. Crazy part is, there have been cases where kids have walked for accidental murders because they claimed they were imitating GTA. That's what gets them out of trouble, saying that video games influenced them, and that's what gets us all IN trouble, because the ESRB only serves to tighten its grip after that. |
