I recently gave my sister my old PSone because i now have the PS2. (i know i'm so slow) but she was looking through my old games and mortal kombat turned up... wow for some reason i've missed this game. my sister and i played for such a long time with her. even though its cheesy and the graphics are crap. i find it so entertaining, any thoughts?
ps i did kick her ass playing it :-D
pps any other old games that people have rediscovered?

Never got into Mortal Kombat. I continually get owned at it no matter what I try putting into it...which is a shame considering I'm not half bad with the Street Fighter series...I kick ass in Killer Instinct...and I sure as hell kick ass in GW:ED.

Old-school wise though...doesn't really matter if it's been made today or twenty years ago...if a game's got replayability it doesn't matter about the age. That's why people still idolize the classics.

I totally agree.
I absolutely *love* (well, okay... not *literal* love, but everyone knows what I mean ) some of the oldest games I have... but newer games are still a lot of fun if they were done properly.
Age doesn't matter if the game is good... the graphics and sound will (almost) always be better with newer games, but the gameplay is what makes a game truly great.

I have many more older games than newer ones. I still play them to today. It's the replayability and the nostalgia, etc...

Recently I went to play through the end of Super Metroid, only to discover all my saved data was erased.

So I started from the beginning. Damn, how could I forget how amazing this game really is? And I haven't played it in long enough that most everything is new to me again. Fun, fun game, definitely.

EDIT: Actually, the creepy thing is that Super Metroid can now be legitimately considered "old-school". Christ, it's been ten years already?! I still remember the day it was supposed to come out (The fact that there was a public release date was still HUGE at the time)...I was the tender age of 10 years old, and my cousin intercepted me, my mom, and my great grandma at Pat's IGA in Wolcott, and took me hunting for the game. As I recall, it got delayed by several days. But damn, was it worth the wait.

I get that feeling every time I pop in Kirby's Superstar. I love old school video games, they represent a time when games weren't total poodles of developmental fury, and people actually wanted to play through games for the gameplay, and not just to see the neato CG ending. It's why I like Megaman Legends more than I do Kingdom Hearts, and why I'll never stop playing KSS no matter how many new Devil May Cry games come out.

Come to think of it, the only games that I can think of that really come close to the challenge that older games gave is Viewtiful Joe and Ratchet and Clank 2 (second time through, of course). They're maddening and there's so much to watch out for, just like back in my glory days on the SNES.

Also, Super Mario RPG is badass.

Ahhh... my favorite classics...

Super Mario Bros 1-3
Super Mario World 1 and 2.
Kirbys Adventure
Kirby Superstar.
SMRPG
Zelda LTTP

My list goes on and on. A GAME DOES NOT HAVE TO HAVE 123413412342 BIT GFX AND SUPER AWESOME SOUND TO BE GOOD!!!!
Thats a lesson everyone should learn.

Hmm..Sonic. Before I bought it for my PC to play but I'd always forget to play it until my sister colored on it with a marker but now it no longer works. No big deal though. It didn't cost too much money. I still want to play it sings I'm lacking my Genisis. I remember Mortal Kombat and Killer Instict! I used to play it at my aunts house with my cousins. It was fun . I don't own any of those games anymore. I just have my broke down PS and PS2.

Yesterday I rediscovered FF5, I have lots of fun with it. One of my friends says that graphics is the primary aspect of a game. But I don't think so, gameplay is.

That's what I did, but he still insists. Well, I think I'll go make a game with good graphics but in which you must press 'A+B+R+G+K' to go up.

Graphics complement the gameplay.

No way in hell could a game rely totally on graphics without having any depth gameplay-wise. And when that's happened... the reviews/sales speak for themselves.

True, and talking about graphics.

IMO, grahics dosen't make the game. Last year I said: I don't care about graphics, it's the games that makes different. (god, my English grammar have really increased. )

But on the other hand, bad graphics can totally destroy a decent game. SMB have good graphics in my book, it's clear and you see what is an enemy and what is a obstacle. Graphics were you have alot of problems doing how everything looks = bad.

Command and Conquer: Tiberian sun. This is a classic, and is still fun today. I played it recently and also finished with both GDI and Nod.

...Pro Wrestling?

*hits a Flying Cross Chop as Starman* Ah yes... See, you just need to have fun gameplay. Even though the graphics for the TIME weren't bad.

For it's time, MK's graphics were the greatest, and today, some people call them 'crap' because they are spoiled by todays graphics. I think no graphics are crappy, they are just an older style is all. I'm not spoiled.

An older classic I've rediscovered is Oregon Trail, for Macintosh. I've been playing around with Mac emulation, system 8, and I have been playing some older Mac games that I loved in school, like Oregon Trail, and Blood Suckers, and Brickles. Wow, now that I think about it, I really want to play Number Munchers...Even though it's supposed to be educational and help you learn numbers, I enjoyed the heck out of that game...I think it's the first game I ever played as well... Anyone else remember Number Munchers and Word Munchers?

...The Tetris 2 thing totally went over my head.

MK's graphics were OK considering that style was new at the time. Now... You can just do better in about every aspect.
