Samurai Champloo was made by the same people as CB, but with swords instead of guns. I recommend it if you can wait a few days to download each episode.

You might also want to try Excel Saga, FLCL, or Trigun, all of them are pretty action packed, and have excellent animation and art. I'm a particular fan of Trigun's style.

Eh, I don't know if you've seen any of these but I'm just going to list some of my faves. You already saw Cowboy Bebop but that's a good start. It was one of my last ones I've seen in awhile.

~Trigun (A must)
~Outlaw Star
~Kenshin
~Innuyasha (heard it was good, only saw a few minutes of it )
~Tenchi series (I liked it )

As you can see, I haven't watched too many animes either . I can't afford to buy the mangas or buy any of them on DVD. Most of them I've seen on TV.

Another thing you could do is just look in the topics in this forum and find which one intrests you .

Fantasy - Start with Miyazaki-- Castle in the Sky, Princess Mononoke, etc.
Action - One Piece, Naruto
Mecha/Sci-Fi - Gundam(watch the first three Mobile Suit Gundam movies)
Romance(bleh) - Chobits, Ai Yori Aoshi

Ah, I forgot to mention Naruto.

Also noteworthy are Angel Sanctuary, Get Backers, and Fruits Basket, those are pretty good, and Fruits Basket is hilarious.

Last Exile.
No idea why no one has suggested it yet, but if you like a bit of everything in a nice package with awesome music, you should watch this.
Serial Experiments Lain if you want story. That's all you'll get, and you'll need to pay attention all the time.
Full Metal Alchemist is pretty cool too, but they're adding filler episodes these days (late 30's in #of episodes)
Scrapped Princess wasn't bad either, it just had alot of stereotypical things in it. Then again, every anime does, so meh.
Samurai Champloo is nice to watch, but it lacks story so far.

It's hard to advice you something to watch, I can't base suggestions on you having viewed one anime ^^;
My advice is to just download an episode of 2 of a series that you can get your hands on, and which you've read a bit about. If it sucks when you've seen the first two episodes, you can safely say you won't like the rest either, since like everything that uses a set of episodes, anime series put out what they're about in the first 2-3 episodes.

How can you not list One Piece under Comedy? It's freaking funny all the time.. at least I think so o.O.

I would have, but I think that City Hunter and GTO are funnier picks than One Piece. Oh, and shows like Outlaw Star and Kenshin are not good starters.

Nevermind being a starter, I wouldn't recommend Outlaw Star period. Unless you get the untranslated versions, those are pretty neat. But I just think some of the voices in OS are so irritating!

Small tip: If possible, watch it subbed. (Sub titled)
It may take a bit to get used to, but it will be well worth it in the end.

General rule of thumb: English voice acting = teh suck. Japanese voice acting = win.

Royearth, (the 2003 edition) is also good. It's short too.

A nice introduction is the Animatrix. i know not a lot of people rate it, but it draws you in to a lot of different styles.

It's anime, but it's not necessarily something most people would watch regardless... That'd be like recommending La Girl Blue for the story or something.

I saw Nadesico, dunno if you'd like it, but I thought it was pretty funny.

This is Naruto. View it. Love it. Be it.

However, if downloading isn't your thing, you may want to give FLCL a try. Be careful though, it helps if you are stoned or goofy before watching it.

Naruto isn't a good starter anime, in my opinion-- too many episodes and all of the action and stuff. The best anime to start out with to help expose watchers to anime and its different forms would be a movie; The Castle of Cagliostro, the best Lupin movie ever, and the first Lupin anime that I saw. It's a good blend of action and comedy, and a bit of romance. You really can't expect something less from Miyazaki, can you?

Yeah but at the same time Lupin's kinda crass, a bit too much so for my taste. I'd say a good starter anime'd be Samurai Champloo; It's just started, it's a great example of good action and art, and it really does seem like something that'll be popular for awhile, assuming nothing bad happens to it (Bad dub, AF stops subbing it...).

I'd also tote Get Backers as a good starter anime, it was the first real series I actually watched and got into, it's got great action and there's a lot happening in it, but not so much that the viewer gets confused, it really is lighthearted but hardcore at the same time. Great to wade into things with.

Samurai Champloo's good, but it's only representative of what today's anime is like. A good starter anime for nowadays' youth would be an old pick from 70s-80s. Galaxy Express 999 is one of my favorites that I recommend from that time.(1979)

Mononoke, Akira, etc. Those are all classics, try 'em first.

The VERY first anime I saw was Macross, when I was a kid. My uncle showed it to me, because he was obsessed with it when the stuff first came on TV in the early 90s in Canada. I can't remember too much, but since then I've been a very minor watcher of the shizzle.
