ARGH! No one suggested Neon Genesis Evangelion!

Eva is a staple of the classic anime circuit, and you ABSOLUTELY MUST watch it along with:

Ghost in the Shell
Trigun
Akira
Vampire Hunter D
Macross Plus

Two things:
1) Not everyone enjoys totally fucked up shows, that makes Evangelion and Akira not-musts.
2) Isn't it better to watch Macross before Macross Plus? Just a thought.

Hellsing.

The one and only anime I've watched so far, and boy was it a doozy.

Maybe I don't watch any more, because I'm afraid they won't live up to the awesomeness that is Hellsing.

Trust me man, Hellsing's just one of many. There's so much out there that's jsut as good as Hellsing, and a bit of it is even better. If you liked Hellsing I'd seriously suggest Trigun, while there's not nearly as much undead slaying, it's still got quite a bit of action and cool guns and neat characters that wear red.

And this one dude that makes people's minds explode... He actually forces a guy to rip his own heart out of his chest at one point. Real wholesome television...

1) Whuh? Evangelion was one of my firsts, and I thought it was brilliant You have to remember that there are many challenging films and shows outside anime, and stepping up is not usually neccessary. Besides, Evangelion is mostly spelled out for you, if you pay close attention. It's not that much of a head-fuck.

2) Nah, Macross Plus is completely self contained and it set decades after the original Macross anyway

No "Blood: the Last Vampire" , it's superior in every way to "Vampire Hunter D" IMO.

Oh I've just got the third DVD of FF:Unlimited and it's starting to get really good.

I agree. Macross is another great series to start out with. Sure, I was 9 years old when I saw it, but I loved it and still do. Also, if you want crazy anime, that is recent. go for Bobobo. That show is grate. That's why I love Grey's avatar..

Evangelion is good, not great, and certainly not ideal to start out with. I really do not consider it as complicated as people think it is. But character progression is not one of Eva's strongpoints.

Mobile Suit Gundam is great to start out with; it's classic, it has a powerful message, and it has a lot of real world elements in it. Also, a lot of the events and stuff that occur in the Universal Century are reminescent of our history, if you look closely.

I would say that Eva's character progression is good, but along with the revalatory plot, it's kinda hard to follow.

I would also say that character development is probably the wrong phrase to use... Character degeneration would probably be better, towards the end their personal lives are all but destroyed

The only example from the Gundam series that is availble here in the UK is Gundam Wing. That was probably my first, but I'd say it'd be awful to start out with unless you were prepared to never miss a single episode. The politics eventually overwhelm every single episode, and things change very quickly. It still makes for a great series, though

Mambo! Mambo!!!

Ha, Bobobo's another one I forgot to mention, I think. Trouble is, it's got way too many Japanese culture references to be good for a newbie, and it moves so fast, it's really the ultimate definition of completely random anime. Plus, you can't really laugh at it unless you know what Fist of the North Star is, and although I haven't seen that, I do know that Bobobo's a parody of it.

But man, is it messed up... Some of the stuff I can't even begin to understand.

Also, as far as Gundam Wing goes, I loved the political parts of it, it really made it a deep series. But there's also the 0080 serieses, and they did release the original MSG in America. Actually, a good chunk of the Gundam series has been released. Personally I wanna see SEED. But yeah, plenty of Gundam over here. G-Gundam, MSG, Wing, Char's Counterattack, 0080, 0083, shitic Love Story (not sure if that's the actual name, but it was pretty crappy IMO anyway...), 08th MS Team, it's a decent list. But I don't really have enough exposure to mecha as it is. I'd love more though.

Midori No Hibi's pretty good. Funny and has a decent plot to back it up.

I'm suprised no one's reccomended Azumanga Daioh yet either.

I recommend Azumanga Daioh.

That good enough for you? It can definitely be a bit out-there at times but you'll definitely have a good laugh or two.

Hm.. the order of which the Gundam series were released in the US is a bit ick. It should be like MSG, 0083, Zeta, CCA, ZZ. (Ok, so I was never really sure if CCA is before or after ZZ, but I didn't see the ZZ in it so I guess it's before ). Considering Zeta has either only recently been licensed, that's pretty bad . I watched CCA before Zeta and didn't really get anything <.<, the Nu Gundam was nice though xD.

I'd recommend the spinoff Gundam series for the mecha needs, not Seed though. Seed should only be watched after additional experience of the UC universe has been gained, there's a whole LOT of stuff that's alike and remakes of the classic moments from MSG. Like a parallell dimension of MSG almost.
