Is the mini-game in FF1 a cheat or not?
The mini-game on the ship in FF1 gives you 100 gp if you win (more on the WSC and PSX versions if you get 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place). Is this mini-game a cheat?
Yes, it's a cheat

Ehm... yeah.
I thought practically everyone knew about that?

If you have an emulator with a turbo feature, just hold down the turbo "A" and "B" buttons (whatever they happen to be for you), and it'll come up in a few seconds.
If not, I believe you should hold "A" and press "B" 55 times... or something like that.

I couldn't call it a cheat ... by the time you get to it and win it, how much more could you have won from regular battles?

It's just a fun little thing to do, and also a way to listen to the prologue music anytime

Depends on the party you're using.
I'm trying the 4 white mage challenge right now, and even at level 6 they still don't always kill imps on the first try.
Which means getting gold is a LITTLE bit slow.

True, but the trick still only works once you get the ship (around Level 5 usually?) ... once you get farther in the game, even with white mages, you should be able to gain gold faster than that

You can call this a cheat, but I would call it a easter egg.

Done it, it's neat. But who would take the pain to solve the puzzles severeal time to just get 100 gold? As Acmlm said, there is quicker ways.

Even with the white mages, I was at level 3 when I beat the pirates and got the ship.
(Those pirates are really weak... I used 2 cures during the entire fight. )

Kitten Yiffer: I don't call it a cheat; I was just wondering what other people thought of it.

I suppose that strictly speaking, it's a cheat.

but as Acmlm said, it's much easier at that point to just go out and fight the battles for cash.

Not SO quick, lol.
It's a nice trick early on, but it's usefulness goes away pretty quickly.

The Kyzoku trick*, on the other hand... that gets a lot more cash than the mini-game in any given amount of time.

*: The Kyzoku trick, for those who don't know, works like this:
1) Save game (preferably at the inn in Cornelia)
2) Turn the NES off
3) Turn the NES back on (2 & 3 can be done simultaneously in several emulators - but not in all)
4) Get into a fight on the ship: it'll always be Kyzoku if you do this trick.
Most of the time you'll fight 2 or 3 Kyzoku... which gets you 240 or 360gp... but if you're lucky you can get 5 Kyzoku, and 600gp.
Of course if you're unlucky, you can also get just 1 Kyzoku, and 120gp....

Cheating is when you whip out the game genie for infinite gil. Cheating is when you modify sram to give yourself more gil. Using something that the game already has to get gil is not cheating. I win...

Party doesn't matter, it just makes it easier if you are using a physically challenged party. Make stipulations that the mini-game can't be used. I win...

Therefore, using it is not cheating. Bottom line, I win...

No, it's not a cheat. Neither is the Kyzoku trick. And the peninsula northeast of Pravoka isn't either.

For those who don't know, NE of Pravoka there's a little peninsula where enemies from the landmass to the north bleed over. So you can fight Zombulls and Trolls at level 5. Now that's a quick way to get gold.

i don't know, it's a little different than actually working to kill an enemy that you encounter a littler earlier than usual in the game. it's actually programmed in to aquire money outside the games normal means. i don't think it falls under the catagory of a 'cheat', or maybe there is just a stigma attatched with officially 'cheating' in a game... it's hard to say

I don't think it's a cheat but the amount of money it gives you is so patheticly small it doesn't matter. I seriously expected more than 100 gold for doing that puzzle; it took me over an hour!

And the survey says: Ehhh, WRONG!
Cheating: Using key combinations to enable something. This has to be built in though.
Codes: Using Game Genie, Gameshark, etc.

i don't know if you know about this, but there is a patch of land 2x1 in size far east and north of the pirate town. the developers messed up in the enemy mapping, and they put late game enemies in those 2 spots, which are accessable early in the game. if you get fire2 or whatever it was called, you can take out 9 frost wolves early on and gain levels fast... i know it doesn't really relate but :] if you don't know where it is, i can post a ss later
