You say the best place to do this trick is in world 4 because of the paratroopas. There are no paratroopas on stairs in world 4. And you're wrong about it being frivolous; it does have quite a bit to do with the trick. IE, it's completely impossible to do the trick via your method. And you come off as having no idea what you're talking about.

good news I made a zmv file. Bad news is you need super mario collection(J) if you want to view it. Go here http://jeremiahnorris.net/Super%20Mario%20Collection%20(V1[2].1)%20(J).zmv.

[EDIT] : I made one now with SMAS.Go here http://jeremiahnorris.net/Super%20Mario%20All%20Stars%20(U).zmv for it.

Alright, I was wrong. I just wanted to inform you with this semi-cool trick, I didn't ask for an argument. Anyway, you are right, I did a quick run through of SMB today using the warp portals, and world 8 is in fact the only world where this is possible.

Anyway, jescis, I would like to see those zmvs, but I think your links are broken.

Ah, by using the warp zone, I completely overlooked world 3, therefore I didn't properly analyse it for stair koopas. In world 3-1 there are regular koopa's coming down stairs, and I performed the trick using jescis' example. I have my own zmv but I am not going to put it up on a host unless someone requests it.

Easier way to rack up lives in SMW: Go to one of the Forest Of Illusion levels, I think #1. (I'm sure the rest of the trick will describe it well enough. ) Beat it, then come back in. Hit the midway point, just beyond it is a changing translucent block. Hit it when it shows a cape, and you'll get a star. Grab the star and run, killing everything, you'll get buttloads of lives. (Try to kill the Wigglers, you get 2ups.) Once you're done, hit Start+Select to leave.

There's also a place in Super Mario Advance where you can simply let shyguys come out of a vase and fall to their doom. I forget how it goes, though. (Do shells bounce off walls in that game, or die like in the original?)

You know, when you mentioned Forest of Illusion 1, I thought you'd mention a different, more interesting trick. The one where you jump from Wiggler to Wiggler, earning incredibly massive amounts of points, and 99 lives.

Well not only was it already mentioned, it's also really hard. They're too far apart. (Unless I was using the wrong ones?)

It's sooo damn easy that trick! XD

I record a movie when I do that trick. I have done it on the real SNES with no problems.

I love the Wiggler trick because I like getting high scores.

Another trick that I don't think has been mentioned is using the chain link fences in the very first fortress. By skilfully staying on the fences and never touching the ground, then going back to the "reverse" side of the fence and stomping those Koopas, you can get eight or nine 1-ups each time.

Of course, this is more of a 9-for-1 trick than an "unlimited" trick.

There are so many ways to get extra lives in SMW its not funny...

But you guys forgot charging through hoardes of enemies with a star. You can get like... 10 1-ups that way...

One of the Vanilla Secret levels in SMW (I believe it was 2) had a P-Switch that turned enemies into coins. You could get something like 50 lives at once if you knew where to carry the switch to and stomp on it.

And yeah, I usually tried the SMB trick in 3-1. Pulled it off all of ONE time in my life.

I did the 1UP trick in 1-7 in Yoshi's Island, works pretty great there too and it's closer to the start

I've seen the trick in SMB1, but was never able to do it ... and never even tried in SMB3 and Mario World I just went in World 7 Fortress 1 to get 99 lives in SMB3, and I know 2 ways to get 99 lives fast in Mario World (the Wriggler trick mentioned above, but also a grey P-switch in one of the last Vanilla Secret levels where there's many Koopas) ...

And there's no such trick in SMB2, just get all the coins you can and try to score 5UP every time in Bonus Chance

SMB2j does apply by similar rules to SMB1, so that seems kind of obvious.

Yeah, you do. I'm not sure exactly what happens, but it has to do with the 1-Up counter rolling over and making the game think that you're out of lives. It doesn't check to see if it's at a max value (like a high score counter probably would) - it just keeps going, probably because the game developers never anticipated anyone racking up such a metric assload of extra lives. Based on what I read in Nintendo Power years ago about your having to be careful with this trick when you get up to about 100 lives, said counter is probably 7 bits, allowing it to count from 0 to 127. If anyone has detailed information on how the game is behaving in this case, I'd appreciate knowing.

You don't automatically die when you get that many lives, you get a game over if you have that many lives and you die. The reason is that it counts everything 129-256 as a negative number, and believes that you should be dead at the time, so after you die when it checks to see if your live count is below zero, it sees it as being so and you get a game over.
