Like Jesper, I use several OS's, and I don't buy in to the idea that any one OS is "better" or "bulletproof", etc. I do however buy into the idea that some OS's are "better" for certain people, or for certain tasks.... The OS's I use are as follows:
There is no "best" OS -- any single OS (or distro) that is better than the others. There IS a "best" OS (or distro) for a particular person, or for a particular task. If you like Windows, and you are most comfortable with it then it's most likely the "best" OS for you. But don't senselessly bash the other OS's because of that, particularly if you haven't tried them! It just makes you look like... some kind of OS.. Racist.... ("racist"? hmm... "OS-ist"?... nah, er.. "bigot" ? bleh.... um "fuckwit". Yeah, I like that. "fuckwit".) Spread the OS love, people! |

This crap ass celeron with WinXP and a P2 450 with SuSe Live CD(Im just getting into linux distros and learning about them now.) | |||

However, writing this would also shut down the seventy newbies just waiting to write up "YEAH LEG MACS SUXXXXXxxx LOL ME 2" posts. Thus, I wrote it. Let me get back to "Mac cult zealots lolol" and make an addenum to my... 'essay'. John Gruber, a nice Mac writer, once wrote the following: the idea of the "cult of apple" (or "cult of mac", if you prefer) is that the bulk of apple's user base is comprised of devoted kooks whose loyalty to the mac is not based on reason. apple's customer base is not comprised of religious zealots. it's comprised of people who notice and appreciate the superior details of the mac user experience. While this does indeed spring from conceding that the Mac is undoubtably better than any other OS (which is impossible to prove or even guess), the core of truth is still that people pick the OS they like and use it, and defend it not because they lick the OS manufacturer's ass, but because they use and like it. This is made painfully clear by the number of Windows (or shall I say "Windoze", "Window$", etc) users hating Microsoft's guts, or even Windows' guts. (edited by Jesper on 07-26-04 03:47 PM) |

Nice for old games... For me, there is a Mac culture. But there is also a hardcore Windows culture and a Linux one. (I rather should call it the distro cult, people fight over the best distro...) I like using diffrent OS's. I'm quite open-minded about OS's. |

Damn Jesper, you didn't have to get personal. Oh, and I am talking out of my ass because I haven't used a Mac since 8th grade. =D So again, I mean no harm or seriousness. "...and defend it not because they lick the OS manufacturer's ass..." Actually, that IS why I defend Windows. Err, what did I say? |

If I were to vote now... I wouldn't have an option. I've switched to Fedora Core 2 (GNU/Linux distribution). It took about twenty minutes to install NTFS support, and automatically mount it ocrrectly. That was for getting all of my programs and settings over, of course. It's a nice OS. I like it far better than Windows (any version). I'm using GNOME for my X Window System session thing. Firefox 0.9.3, Gaim 0.80, Mozilla 1.7.2, Vim 6.3, etc are all installed on here now... Took me a while to actually get Microsoft TrueType core fonts installed here. It's not really a disadvantage of Linux, IMO, it's a disadvantage to Microsoft's almost complete monopoly... This board requires Arial, for example. There are a couple other sites that also depended on Microsoft things. There are a few programs that aren't availible for anything other than Windows. I seem to be able to use WINE in order to run them fine (Myst, FileZilla, Media Player Classic). well... FC2 seems just perfect for me. |

The're should have been an "Other OS" option.. Well since I'm on Win XP mainly, I choose it... 1) Windows XP -> 200 GB (IDE0) 2) Mandrake Linux -> 70 GB (IDE1) 3) Knoppix Linux -> 50 GB (IDE1) I once had Windows Longhorn too, but due to the fact that it was still an Alpha release and had too many compatibility problems I got rid of it.. I've been using Linux for quite some time now and I got to say that it surpasses Windows in many aspects, setting servers on kde is just perfect. |

I refuse to select "SuSE LInux" because I simply do not use that. I use Gentoo Linux and I find it quite suitable for my needs for now. But I find that even it still takes away some of my choices.. I switched to Gentoo from Slackware because I wanted a source based distro and it went from that.. But portage pisses me off something awful. So I'll be switching to Linux From Scratch or FreeBSD soon enough. |
