Swimming is a great recreation sport! But, I have found out most people find it girly or they assume it isn't a sport at all! This upsets me, since swimming is the only athletic thing I do. What do you guys think of swimming?

Competitive swimming is a sport, I'll admit that. My sister is on a swim team anyway...

And free swimming... it's just fun.

It is a sport, but it is a tad girlish when it is done competitively. However, I have no problem with who does it, male or female.

What do you mean a tad girlish?
Why do you think it's girly?
It's not girly! I mean, c'mon! Look at all the great Olympic men swimmers!
Like Ian Thorpe! And other people I don't know!
Swim practice is hard work, too!
Sorry if I seem so defensive.

In all my days of sport, I've never heard swimming referred to as 'girly'.

But I'd wager the people who call it that couldn't last a kilometre...or 'mile', even.

What races/strokes do you do, by the way?

Well, I'm not old enough for High School racing, plus I don't know if I even want to get into that.
I have competed in only two meets. I didn't really like em' much, so I haven't done one sience. I really should... Anyways, I did a 50-meter backstroke (that's down and back in a 25-meter swimming pool) both times.
So, as you can probably tell I'm not a 'hardcore' swimmer yet.

That wasn't the smartest thing to say in this event. There are a lot of competitive swimmers...

People on the swim team also want me to join because my sister has, but I prefer free swimming .

Free swim is fun. Especially when you go off the diving boards in a cannonball.

On a swim team, there are normally a number of yards or meters, that how long the stroke is.

The strokes are butterfly, backstroke, freestyle, and breaststroke.

Anything else?

Yuppers, JJ64, you got the strokes right. A normal sized swimming pool that you would find in High Schools and stuff is 25-meters. An Olympic-sized pool is 50-meters. I'm not sure how many 25s you'd have to do to get a mile. I'm not good at converting stuff like that.

If I'm not mistaken, it would be 64 times.

Not everyone swims in a pool. I swim the Pier to Pub, which is a 1.2km ocean race.

Thank you for listing the strokes for me...but I was asking Snika what strokes he did.

EDITED after misunderstanding (28/7 - No problems, JJ)

What the Uday Fug are you taking about, JJ? It sounds like you're attempting to be a smart arse somehow - believe me, I'm like this => O_o

Your first comment is nonsense. Not everyone swims in a pool. I swim the Pier to Pub, which is a 1.2km ocean race.

*shakes head at the madness*

No, I'm not attempting to. I mistyped the post, so it makes no sense. It's an accident.

I was on the swim team for two years in high school (and water polo for one year) and it was great. No one really thought it was girly either. Though, I did find it odd that few of the male swimmers would shave their legs..but that's only cause they were serious about it and it takes a few secs off of your time.

Oh my, I always found swimming to be too relaxing to be a sport, as opposed to the violent, or overexauhsting ones Like FootBall, Soccer, etc. Competitive swimming is a very good source of entertainment, though I probably could never do it myself, for various reasons.

FYI, this thread is a month old. But of course, how many people do we actually have here that would make or post in a swim-related thread.

Its also a great sport of you have asthma. Myself and a few others on the team had it.

I've always thought it silly that new posters should somehow be forbidden or discouraged from posting on what is (to them) a brand-new, fascinating topic, just because it's "old" to the veterans.

Let the record show that Masako (09-14-2004) wasn't on this forum at the time of the last posts from Anya and JJ64.

And let the record also show that I'm a terrible swimmer. ;
