The Olympic Games return to Athens I've been looking forward to this ever since Greece applied to host the games. I have family in Greece, and no doubt they'll be going to see some of the events...

I'm not sure about the facilities yet... The Greeks kinda like to lay about and have cigarrettes all day I'm sure they'll pull it together at the last moment, they always do

Hmmm... Back on topic, our Olympic team is considered to be rubish this year... A few of our top atheletes are out due to injury right now, and many of the main event trials are now closed.

We've been given the target of five gold medals, and 25 medals in total. Shame that Curling isn't a summer sport, really...

Meh, why is it that whenever I turn on the TV or radio it's the anti-doping agency this, and BALCO that, and disqualifications.

What happened to just playing the game...

Curling should be the only Olympic Sport, since, well, 2002 Olympic Men's Curling Champions: Norway (I watched the final match against Canada while chatting with Colleen, I remember. Well, Chatting and taunting him. )

The Norwegian Olympic Team is going to suck. We were the 2000 Olympic Women's Football Champions, for 2004, the team didn't manage to qualify. Our Women's Team Handball team, which usually is among the best in the world, did bad in the last World Cup, and thus didn't qualify, either.
Then there's Trine Hattestad. 2000 Olympic Women's Javelin Throw Champion. Now she's retired.
Beach Volley. We have some good Beach Volley teams. However, they might not be allowed to play, because the Norwegian Olympic Committee refuses to abide by rules set by FIVB (The International Volleyball Federation).
The Norwegian Olympic Team basically have none left of the usual prospective Gold Winners. The only chance I see for us taking any gold is in men's rowing and paddling. We have some good guys there. Else, no gold for us...

Of course, all in all, it doesn't really matter. Summer Olympics isn't exactly our thing. While we are the nation with the most Winter Olympic gold medals in the world, we hardly ever win anything in the Summer Olympics.

Hm... medal thoughts...

We have very few teams in the Olympics this time around. For one, none of our soccer or basketball teams managed to qualify. I doubt our softball or baseball teams will do that well, although the girls could surprise. Women's water polo is our best shot at a team medal.

As for individuals...

Alexandre Despatie (Diving) - The best medal "lock" we have. 18-year old Despatie competed at Sydney and finished 4th in the 10m. Should win one medal, possibly two - and they could be golden.

Perdita Felicien (100m Hurdles) - Track and field can be fickle at times, but if Felicien has a clean run it'll be between her and America's Gail Devers for the gold.

Nicolas Gill (100kg Judo) - Our Olympic flag bearer, and with good reason - he struck bronze in 1992 and silver in Sydney. At 32 and coming off a torn ACL, can he complete the trifecta and obtain his gold?

Christine Nordhagen (72kg Freestyle Wrestling) - Here's a name you don't see that often, but Nordhagen has blazed out of the gates in 2004 and is being tipped for a medal - but it will likely be silver. Reason? If she makes it to the finals, her opponent would likely be multi-time world champion and one of the best women's wrestlers ever, Kyoko Hamaguchi of Japan. Actually, many of our women's wrestlers are considered podium candidates, which speaks volumes of our progress in that area.

Alison Sydor (Cross-Country Mountain Bike Cycling) - She's always in contention at the Olympics for a podium position, and her recent form only adds fuel to that argument.

And of course, add in our usual canoe/kayak medals. Hopefully more than our 18 from Sydney.

I'm looking forward to the coverage itself, of course. Aside from news breaks, CBC carries coverage throughout the day - from 7 AM to 1 AM, and overnight on the weekends. And THEN you have TSN, who is also contributing 14-15 hours of coverage a day - mainly of stuff CBC doesn't cover. (soccer, boxing, volleyball, baseball, etc.) Then you *ADD* onto that the French coverage from SRC and RDS, *AND* the NBC coverage... Oh man.

Sadly, Sir Steve Redgrave has retired... But that won't stop our other teams We are damned fine rowers, and Matthew Pincent for one has enough experience to bring in more medals

Interesting fact: I've already been to the Olympic Stadium... In a typical Greek twist, they've re-used the atheletics stadium and added a spanky new roof to it. It's actually the same one as the one they used in the 1997 World Atheletics Championships. I saw the Javelin and the Tripple Jump in the atheletics stadium and the Marathon in the 1896 Olympic Stadium

Yeah, Canada and GB will split the rowing medals fairly evenly I'd imagine.

I'm just a bit ticked we won't see much of the soccer. TSN should be showing the men's semis and the bronze/gold medal games, but I'd imagine if our girls hadn't choked against Mexico, we'd get more coverage.

The opening ceremony was fantastic, although the pomp was almost intoxicating The poor girl almost forgot her lines

I loved the lake, that seemed to me like a big triumph for engineering and showmanship Didn't expect it after the fiasco finishing the stadium
