Ah ha! I speak fast Canadian. No better way to describe. As eloquent and quick as my speech is, it is constantly broken by solliquisms (sp?) and is plagued by that slowdown stutter that you get when you hear those stupid lumberjack cartoon characters. Plus, you combine that with my regular born speech (all the guys in my family have indistingushible voices unless you are in constant proximity with all of us), you have a weird mixture of Canadian and farmer...

I have also picked up a few Californianisms/Americanisms in my speech, more in word choice than pronunciation. I think, also, I have tended to flatten out my vowels to be better understood by Americans used to their fairly flat and droney speech patterns. Rs and Os and As are the hardest things and the biggest differences, I believe. Meanwhile... one of my favourite things in Californian speech is how "our" and "are" are homonyms - they sound the same when Californians say them. It's cute. |

I've only talked to one friend in the US, and it sure as hell isn't happening again... I hate using the telephone, so using the internet is just not going to happen again Apparently I have a cute English accent, though (edited by Kasumi-Astra on 07-21-04 06:43 PM) |

Since 2001, I've been practising an English accent; it gets stronger every day I do. Now I can speak fast and fluently without a thought or switch to American, seemlessly.

I'm from Seattle, so I guess I have that accent. Though I think it's the "normal", "pure" accent because I don't actually notice any accent. I find the New England accent the funniest. |

I think we all have accents but don't notice it. The only way we'd notice it is if we went to another state or country and heard other people talk. My mom says she has an LA accent but I don't see it

Originally posted by max You haven't been to England then I live virtually next door to Liverpool, and I can't tell what the buggers are saying! When I was in Newcastle last december, I couldn't understand a word they said. My accent is a mix between a strongish Lancashire dialect (ee, up lad!) and a slight southern/london accent (thanks to my dad) Just one gripe: why do most americans ASSUME that all brits speak like the queen? Everytime I've talked to a friend in America, they always say "you sound nothing like your queen at all". We have a much broader range of accents and dialects than americans. |
