At least I have an unlimited plan. I've been stuck in dial-up land for 7 years, but by the end of the year, we'll have broadband. |

Dial-up is where I am, and where I'm staying, I'm afraid. Broadband is still too expensive. I use a flat rate package, though, so it's pretty cheap and not too expensive. However, I did use a 28.8 modem for four years, so when I got this new PC with 56kb/s, I was rather happy. |

Besides, all it means is you can't download as much. Pages on average load a fraction of a second quicker on broadband, so what's the big deal with dialup, anyway? ...You can download a lot more. And upload too. Can't forget uploading these days. |

Yup, with broadband, you can download more and upload. This is what I do at work, I take advantage of the university class connection and download tons of stuff off of bittorent... I can't really do that with dialup

Audiogalaxy was good. And I was in Dialupland in since 1998, but left it in late 2000. |

My point was what's the use in totally disconnecting yourself just because you can't get to your Broadband connection? Dialup still lets you do 90% of most of the things you can do with broadband anyway. The 10% being downloading and uploading |

I had dialup for four years, then just got cable now, and now my mom wants to switch out of cable. This presents a problem for me, as pretty much the only thing I do all day is download and watch anime. However, rather than get 56K again, I've managed to convince her to switch to DSL instead. I really don't want to go back to 56K, I can't stand it, especially AOL. And what's worse, there's all of those low cost ISPs nowadays like Juno.com or Earthlink, they suck, and they're raping so many people of their money by saying it's just 10 dollars a month, but it's not even worth 10 dollars a month! Yep, I gotta get DSL. |

If people cannot convince their parents to get DSL (assuming the majority of the people live at home): What about trying to get a job and work for the montly fee ? Today's prices for flatrates aren't too high, so for a these few 20 or 30 US-$ a lower amount of working might convince the parents ("Mom, I wanna have broadband; and I'll work for that alone!" ), so never forget any option - it's another thing if broadband still is not available or really way too expensive offers exist, like broadband via satellite only; you need a normal telephone "back"-data channel for sending data packages and very often there's no flatrate at all |

You don't think I tried that already? My mother's a very hard headded person, and she doesn't think I can pay it, despite the fact that even with the spare money I make (IE pocket change and stuff) I could pay for broadband myself. I've just barely convinced her to let me go half and half on DSL; broadband at this point would be impossible. And as for signing up or my own account, I'm not 18 yet, and if she found out that I was going behind her back to subscribe of my own accord, I'd never hear the end of it. I'm fine with DSL though, so long as she lets me pay for a little of it.

isn't broadband DSL? I thought broadband is anything that isn't dialup... I want high speed internet in any form, problem is, I'm having a hard time asking my aunt (since I'm living with her while I go to school) to allow me to install it...i dunno, i guess I'll leech off of my work connection until I get my own place... |

Broadband is any fast connection internet. In this country we have both DSL and cable. They're roughly the same quality, but cable offers a slight edge due to the lower contention ratios. My cable line to the server is approximately shared with half as many people to that on the DSL lines. Also, the main broadband provider, and the main telecoms giant in the UK, has just slapped a 1gb/month download cap on all it's services. That's just absurd |

I where forced to use pay-per-minute dial up for one month. It almost costed 1000 SEK (125 US dollars...) Yep, dial-up is expensive... |

Bleh I miss my DSL. All those times downloading and watching things like music videos I couldn't watch on TV since I didn't have satelite. Now when I try to watch them it takes forever and it doesn't have very nice quality I wish it would come back to me. Now something takes forever and a day to download for me. Damnit.. |

Sympatico used to have upload/download caps of 5 GB each way. Needless to say, they had to axe that less than a year after it was instituted. (Then again, since they just partnered with MSN... *cries*) |

I forgot how utterly painfull dialup was (I've been on DSL for awhile now), until I had a chance to use it again on my borrowed laptop... I feel for you. --Snika |
