Perhaps you could have an option in your profile where you can choose to manually or automatically mark forums/threads as read? It would be useful for some lazy people.

I've gotten pretty use to hitting Mark all forums read now, but I think this wouldn't be a bad idea.

Yeah i think its a good idea i forget to click mark all read most of the time before i leave and i come back the next day having no clue. I like it on vBB where you can view every thread that has been posted in since your last visit.

automatic systems utilize cookies......

meaning if you go to another PC the indicators would be wrong anyway... ort if you happen to delete your cookies....

although I guess some people would still prefer it....

I would opt for Manual due to the fact that the New icons are right no matter what comiputer I go to

I say how about a choice to have the "mark as read" date thing update automatically?

Like, posts made 24, 48, xx hours ago show up as 'new'?

Is it not possible to just check when the user was last on the forums and then mark new threads and posts by that?

Surverus... not in the database no....

cause if you ahve 30 forums...

that's 30 records for each user.... Int 10 sized time stamps....

so 200 users..... 30 records... 600 records....

if you have 7000 threads.... that's 7000 records per user......

or for 200 users ....

7000 * 200 = 1,400,000 million records.....

not feasable...

How does the board handle its current "mark as read" feature?

He already said: it uses cookies in the user computer, not in the database.

knuck... no Id idn't.... I said an automatic system would have to use cookies.....

what I DID say already though

is that the current system is stored in the database.....

and on a forum specific level....

it just stores the date you hit Mark forum read.... and if the thread was replied to after that date..... it shows the new icon

can it not do 100% the same thing but rather then the last time you clicked the link it would be the last time you was at the forum?

yeah except for the fact... that if the last time you click something in that forum isn't the last thread you are reading, which it wouldn't be, lol
