I have just gotten into hacking saga games and I want to transfer some graphics to snes games. I have looked at Zophars Domain for some saga utilities but all I could find was GenSMS. Its just a graphics converter, but its dos. What are some programs that will either: 1. Extract graphics so I can edit them in YY-CHR, or a similar program. 2. Convert the .bin/.smd file to a .smc file so I can run it in ZSNES. Either of the two would be great. Thanks |

...what the fuck? Converting "Saga" Genesis games to SNES? Do you have ANY idea what you're doing? |

Simply put, #2 is impossible. As for #1, download a program like GROM that can convert smd format ROMs to bin format. Then you can use YY-CHR to edit tiles. Simple. (In fact, it's so simple, that this is on the opposite side of the spectrum from your second request.) (edited by Parasyte on 07-16-04 11:28 AM) |

I didn't know that converting saga to snes was impossible, because I have d/l programs that can convert nes to snes (with major graphic glitches but not unplayable) so I figured that this might be possible. And thanks parasyte for that idea. I never even thought of doing that. So simple...

Your only obstacle with #1 will probably be compression, although it's probable that not all of the graphics in whatever game you're trying to hack will be compressed. However, if you're trying to hack the Sonic games, I'd recommend the Sega Data Compressor to help in decompression. And if you're not, forget what I just said. |

The ONLY reason NES games can be converted to SNES games is because the SNES has a native 6502 mode in it's CPU, sense the SNES cpu is an upgraded 6502 processor (65c816). Converting Genesis games would require a total rewrite of the game's code since A: the processors run at different speeds, B: different hardware (thus, different address ranges, registers, etc), C: different CPU, meaning the ASM is differetn (z80 and 65c816 aren't exactly the closests of cousins in the family of ASM langauges. If anything, compression routines would probably be the easiest thing to convert since a compression routine will work in almost any language with the right modifications to the original code. Daiz, Genesis uses a Motorola 68000 (M68K) as it's main CPU. The z80 is more comparable to SNES' SPC-whatever. It's just a coprocessor, which is mainly used to handle audio output.

The only thing you could do that would even come close to #2 would be to extract some gfx and import into a SNES rom, then you could run a game with completely fake graphics, but that would just be stupid. |
