Originally posted by neotransotaku Ours are a little more expensive, about 50 cents a disc for recordable DVDs, but cheaper for CD-R, as low as $4. In a few years, I bet the DVD-RW player will tape shows on DVD's, will cost less than $100, and it'll be common. |

obseletion is a product of any form or technology. with technology always advancing everything sooner or later is bound to become obselete because something newer and better will come along to take its place. i was watching something on the discovery channel on the daily planet and it said that cell phones will become obselete as well. (ALMOST EVERYONE in a developped country that is lower middle class (at least where i live and in asia and what not) have cell phones so that'll be weird cause cell phones do so much as it is) they plan on releasing a phone that has a microphone on your pinky finger that is wired up your arm to essentially the phone and the way you hear is you stick your index finger in your ear. your skeleton is used to pick up the signal and it sends vibrations through your body to your finger so you can hear what the people are saying. not only that but they plan on integrating all the functions such as e-mail and what not into watches and everything as well. so no matter what kind of technology you've got sooner or later it'll be obselete. |

How exactly can Dvds really become obsolite? They have enough space to fit a whole movie with a few commentaries and deleted scenes and whatever, which is perfectly enough for most people. And, they picture quality is pretty much perfect. I mean, yeah, people love Dvds because they're DIFFERENT from VHS; the quality is a thousand times better, you can choose which section you want to watch virtually instantly, subtitles and different audio tracks can be added seamlessly... But what more can you really want? Until they invent something that turns your living room into a personal cinema that isn't bound by the usual laws of time and space and thus can exist within your living room... I don't think Dvds are going to be obsolite. The rest of what Bill Gates said was mindless rubbish. Listen to Miyamoto if you want to hear someone talk about future possiblities that actually sound appealing. Billy boy can't do it. Tv that decides what we watch? The media does that pretty well by itself, I don't particularly want to be mind controlled by an innanimate object built by Bill Gates. As for Dvds getting scratched, only idiots go around thinking 'maybe I should put this Dvd underneath the lamp instead of putting it back in the case'. Or something. How the hell do people scratch Dvds anyway? How can you accidently scratch a Dvd? Either you need nails that are claws or you're the sort of blithering idiot who drops Dvds and then accidently stamps on them, before tripping and landing in the fireplace and burning to death because you can't figure out how to use your arms anymore. In which case it's simply natural selection. I'm going to keep all my Dvds in the kitchen drawer with the knives. Just in case they get scratched. |

I bloody hope so... DVD technology is flawed, and DVD software and hardware is so prone to faults. Mind you, what with Bill getting involved, he could make it far, far harder to import films from abroad. This is still internationally legal, although there is legislation in the UK that makes it harder.

Back in the day when CD's were released people said that "unlike LP's CD's are invulnarable", it was unproven untrue very quickly. I have two scratched CD's, the first one was caused by my own stupidity long time ago... The other one was scratched to the thank of a CD player who hates Copy protection. (Both plays fine thought) I heard that DVD's are more durable than CD's. I heard for CD's, dirt is worser than scratches. Many times it actually helps to clean a CD whenever there is problems. |

I wondered why my Kanye West CD skipped but..still..it was only a week old and it skipped on the new but cheap boombox. Which sucked..sometimes I don't like either DVD's or CD's because they get all scrateched and useless when you paid hella money for them

Kasumi: It's legal but if you don't have a region-free CD player... I know you can set up a DVD-ROM drive on your PC to do that, but it's a bit harder with a DVD unit, no? |

I've heard it's possible, but I don't think it'd be a good idea to try it unless you've got some spare cash you don't mind wasting on a replacement, and/or a lot of experience doing such things. |

Some DVD players don't have region codes, yeah. But when we were shopping for ours, we couldn't find any good ones like that. Not like I plan to import any DVD's anytime soon though. Yeah, you pretty much need to modchip the DVD player, no? Lot easier for the PC... |

Originally posted by ColleenWe were rather surprised to find it, actually. It was a good deal though, so we decided we'd get it. I didn't import any DVD's because I didn't have a player for it; it's annoying to play them on the computer instead of the TV. Now that I have it though, I can finally get some movies that haven't made it over here to Europe. Yeah, and of course the procedure is different for every brand, model, and it's possible that they'd have multiple versions of some models that would each have a different necessary procedure... it's not really worth it, in other words. |
