Hmm...I wonder how true his claim is going to be, what do you guys think? in some ways, i think this is ludacris (considering how long CDs and VHS were around). But then again, what does Bill have up his sleeve Here is the link to the article (and this time I made sure I read it all ) DVDs will be obsolete in 10 years |

This is supposed to surprise me? I wouldn't be surprised if they're not already obsolete with some of the stuff I've seen coming PS3-wise...I mean there's discs in the works that will probably be the size or close to my 60 gig hard drive.

I remember about talk about DVD's back in 1995 (they weren't called DVD's thought) So they are about ten years old now. But Obsolete in ten years? Well CD's are still used alot today... It can take more time than ten years. Bill Gates have made alot of talk about intillegent homes, heck there are homes who are intilgent already. But they have been arouns since the 80's actually... and never did break through. |

CDs have been around for so long because they were so good that it took a long time to get something significantly better (like DVDs). From what I've heard, there will be disc formats supporting up to 50GB per disc within a couple years... whether they actually make it to market on time or not, remains to be seen. |

DVD discs are already obsolete. There's better stuff out there. It's just that, the technology is so widespread... it would be hectic to introduce a new format when everyone has just settled into this one.

I don't want to have the computer know who I am. That would scare me. Plus you have all those over protectve parents who wont let a 13 year old kid watch a pg 13 thing.

And hopefully, they won't rebel or any of that shit. Bildo Gaytes (or so I like to call him) is a money-hoarding jackass who deserves to be shot. He just embezzled his way to the top!

Let's hope Sony's new PSP format doesn't catch on. I think Gates has a point but 10 years is still a long way off. The DVD market's just rolling along at the moment, and info about new formats/features/etc. is still a pipedream at best - and even if the stuff's developed, it'll take time to lower that price point. |

Yeah, but in a matter of years, anything and everything becomes obselete. Except for television.

Not exactly true. The concept of television hasn't become obsolete, but look at the advances... cable, different A/V plugs, HDTV, satellite, picture-in-picture, closed captioning, etc. A TV itself can certainly become obsolete as new features become available. Same with a computer. |

Before DVDs become obsolete, don't VCTs need to become obsolete first? And while they're headed down that path, certainly, they are hardly obsolete yet.

VCR's? Those are heading down the road but the majority of movies are still released onto it, and it likely will remain that way for a while yet. Even if you don't see too many tapes at an electronics store, there's still the issue of the video store market. The video store near my house pretty much has a 50/50 split on new DVD/VHS releases, because some people either can't afford to upgrade or don't want all the spiffy features. As long as you make money off it, you don't give up on it. |

Well, I do recall once reading that DVDs/CDs don't last as long as once expected. Apparently, the magnetic tracks wear out eventually, no matter how good you've taken care of it. And we don't want that now, do we? And VCTs can be used to record without a $500 DVD Recording device. And they still work semi-decent, save the mediocre quality of the picture. |

I suppose that's why my cd skips. The point is, they're just saying that this is the next inevitaable step in technology. |
